Birdeater?

Birdeater?

Last Sunday I went to my local exotics store & they had this on display, sorry for the bad picture. I’m planning on going back soon. It was simply labeled “sericopelma birdeater” on the enclosure, and that it was a MM. $50. He’s really caught my eye but What species is it..?? Is it maybe parahybana?
Mature males take on some extreme physical changes their last molt, so you will have to wait for someone with more experience and still may not be able to identity.

What makes you think it's not a Sericopelma?

What kind of crazy place sells mature males without a gd name and let alone for $50. They are useful to one customer base exclusively and the species would matter. They sound like crooks.

Also tell them I said their setup sucks. That T is going to fall to his death.

I'd probably name and shame them I mean advertise he is there on your local Facebook arachnid page in case anyone needs him. Smart people will read between the lines and not shop there going forward.

OP might as well buy it if the intention is just to keep it as a pet for the remainder of it's life - it won't do much good to anyone looking for a male to breed with a specific female since there's no telling if it's the same species as said female... Might prevent hybrids, too. It must be a fairly fresh MM, because it still looks in good shape.

@spiderteeth - if the shop can't tell you exactly what species it is, then you're not likely to find out using pics alone. I would assume it is a Sericopelma species, but which one is hard to say.

About keeping it for a pet- I was kinda planning on doing so anyway. I have a spare empty 10gal long that would do nicely for a birdeater. I wanna get him out of that tiny, dangerous setup… I’m not at all interested in breeding since I’m still fairly new and have a demanding job (911 operator). I will update if I end up purchasing.

1. No reason other than that’s the closest I got from just looking at him. I am in no way an identifier expert which is why I posted. 😅

2. I know. I tried to suggest changes to the setups but they weren’t receptive to it at all.

3. I might. I don’t have a facebook but I’ve been meaning to make one. I won’t post about them here since it’s extremely close to where I live and I don’t like to take chances. I only go there for bulk cork bark as it’s cheap at this establishment, but I might end up ceasing my support to them. They are mainly a fish place with a tiny arachnid section.

I'm a paramedic so I get the lack of free time. These guys are the perfect pet for our jobs. Especially when we just want to be in alone in silence for a little while :)

It would be amazing of you to give him a sanctuary to spend the rest of his days. Maybe you could even haggle on the price a little.

Hey good on you for being an EMS! Eventually I want to be a detective but I’m too young to enter the academy at the moment.

You & one of my friends have convinced me- I’ll be updating in the next couple of days. 🤣 what’s a 13th spider, eh?

Rescue one prisoner it’s quickly replaced , wish I could get Ts as cheap as pet shops I could rebuild a collection cheaply lol . 😂

@spiderteeth
Because the pic shows not really a useful feature for a identification, you can only go back and check if there are Tibialapophysis.
If not it is (most likely) a Sericopelma sp.
If there are it is something else, maybe Lasiodora sp.
