Why do I occasionally run into pics of people mating tarantulas on their hands?

If someone is under the influence of "handling" there's nothing you can do. He/She will continue to handle.

Probably happens when they end up mating outside the enclosure and the keeper allowed them to push each other onto his/her hand. Not saying it's a smart thing to do though.

I've had mealworm beetles mate on my hand. Not sure two dogs could fit on my hand though.

Some people are just crazy. But there are serius people out there who do it. They take the drumming male between leg pair 2 and 3 on each side, then to the female, lift her up and get the male close enugh to do his thing, and then you can safely remove the male. Normally it requires 2 persons to do, but the point is to save the male with species where the female readyly kills the male fast. It is of course for the very experienced keeper.

Right. Since females in many species chase the male away or try to kill them, he's often panicky and could easily run up your arm and on your back, or zip across the floor and under something heavy.

I've had males killed as soon as they finished insertion; I would not want to have that fight happening on my hand.

I personally dont think its that big of a deal, nor very dangerous depending on the species. I've picked up a MM Versicolor to take into my females enclosure, and the female was hunched up in a corner... so I had to pick up the female too to get her out of the corner... and I had both T's on my arm at this point, and the male just launched forward towards the female, and started doing their thing... I didn't want to disturb their "mating" session, so I just let it be... Mating success... I didn't intentionally do it, but its not a big deal in my opinion.

The females fangs don't look fully hardened in the picture and could be brittle. He could get bit and his spider could lose a fang. I wouldn't want to try something like this with a more potent species(or at all).
