I think a lot of that varies by location.

I know someone that works at a petco and keep Ts himself. In that instance the Ts at Petco are very well cared for.

On another occasion I have run into people that were afraid to pick up a 8" rosey boa that got into another cage by accident. I told the goof that if he would unlock the cage I would right the situation.

I work at PETCO,

And rest assured any T purchased at store #1759 is given not only sufficient care, but are all the privelaged recipients of the bulk of my attention (I can't help it, I'm slightly partial).

I got lucky at PETCO, when I was hired, they needed to fill the Reptile Specialist position. But in response to Gene's concerns, he's absolutely right. If I'm not on, most of the staff on hand won't even take out a ball python or Mtn. Horned Lizard to show an interested customer.

The only problem I see at most petshops, including petco. Is overfeeding of the T's. They put in too many crickets, too frequently. Other than that they seem to do fine. After all they are pretty hardy little creatures. I'd still get a rosey at a small mom and pop shop. Since not only would it be cheeper, but you would probably be supporting a better store.

Also, you should check the classified forums here and look at the dealers list to see if you may be within driving distance of any of them.

edit: Heh I just did it for you and you are only 3 hours from Botar. You should pay him a visit some weekend. I'm sure you would be better off going to one of the biggest breeders and dealers in the country rather than a local petco. Here is a link with directions even. :)

I'm in charge of reptiles/aquatics at a Petco near Milwaukee, and our Ts are very well cared for as well. I made sure that all other employees know how to care for them, but none of them know near as much as I do about them. So if a customer comes in when I'm not there, they probably won't learn much. Their habitats are always in good condition as well.

I've heard plenty of complaints about PetCo from PETA and the likes, and I can assure you, in the case of my store, all of our animals are very well cared for.

I have to agree w/ Gene. It's funny, too, how even within a relatively small geographic area, there can be such a difference in quality.

I live just outside of Chicago and there's three PetCos within less than 30 minutes of me. Two are fairly nice and the third in a complete dive! I recently read that PetCo's stock price has been performing poorly lately, so apparently we're not the only ones noticing.
