Dog food for rhino beetles?

I've heard about people feeding dog food to their rhino beetle larvae for some supplemental protein and I decided to try it out, but it gets wet easily, no surprise. The thing is, once it gets wet it goes bad real fast, it smells and sometimes it even grows mould. Is there any way to limit this or do I simply have to change the dog food every few days? Also are there other things that can be used? I've heard that you can use rotten apples but I'm not sure if they should be dehydrated first.

Make sure the piece is very small and the larva is eating it within a few hours. I do mine once a week.

Some people use moist-type dogfood so I doubt the apple needs to be dry.

Do you have Orin McMonigle's beetle book? Good tips inside
