Fear of spiders...

I was thinking about this last night and remembered as a small child I was terrified of spiders and yet during the summer I would go out and feed the grass spiders that spun a silken home in the bushes around the yard.
In 1977 we went to Florida to visit The Everglades. There I found a huge Argiope sitting in the center of her web. Transfixed with awe I stood there for 30 minutes until my brother shook me out of my trance. Shortly after this experience I found the Theraphosid section in the T encyclopedia and discovered the existence of "birdeating tarantulas".
It was then I crossed over. My fascination and curiosity overcame the fear, and it was then I knew I had to learn more about these beautiful creatures. Intelligence along with respect for tarantulas propelled me into the hobby. Now I know, in many cases, that knowledge and the desire to learn can overcome the horror of of Mom screaming and batting at house spiders with rolled up newspapers. :D
