For those of you with no Watering Hole access, I'm repeating my story here so everyone can see this.
It's as bizarre as Gail's BACKDOOR MAN thread
here we go:
I've been trying to breed my B emilia female with no success. Currently, I have 2 mature males here on loan, and she's not really been interested in either of them. One of them is an old male, matured at least 8 months, and he got her to mate once so far. The other male is freshly matured, and is too skittish to even approach her.
So, today, I opened up all 3 containers, and decided to see if the presence of the 2 males would spark something.
Boy, did it ever!
For the first 3 hours, the males wandered around, and the female ate a cricket. I kept going in to check on them periodically.
The last time I went in, I was excited to see them in a mating position...but oh oh! I looked closer, and lo and behold, the old male, had the young male in position, and the female had exited her container!
The old male was holding the young male up, and trying like hell to insert his palps...somewhere! The young male was cooperating and actually getting into the 'female' position!
I couldn't believe it, so I called in my daughter, and my friend that was visiting to come look. They were really going at it too. It was the most bizarre thing I've ever seen (in regards to tarantulas, anyway!).
I finally gently separated them with a plastic spoon, since I didn't want anyone biting anyone else. The young male was pissed, and he bit the spoon repeatedly. I'm not sure if he was reacting to his mistreatment by the old male, or that he was objecting to the separation.
Anyway, if it happens again, I'll be sure to have a camera handy to record it.
