A friend of mine is thinking about populating their empty 6 Gal tank with a mantis. They have a lot of shrimp experience, but no terrestrial inverts. What are some beginner friendly mantids obtainable in the US? Can they keep a population of FFFs or isopods in the tank as a cleanup crew/snack...
Whoa, that's a crazy escalation of symptoms over such a short period. Were you handling them at all? Was this purely through passive exposure while doing tank maintenance? That sucks!
I don't know if 6-7 years counts as "experienced", but I maintain a hardline No OWs policy. I have enough bad dreams about getting bit by my Ts, I don't need to make them any worse!
I have neurological issues and have no idea how a serious bite would affect me. Also poor coordination/tremors +...
Huh, I didn't know the horn was a sex-specific trait either! FYI there is a NW horned species, Sphaerobothria hoffmanni. Perhaps not as well-endowed as some Certogyrus, but a unicorn spider nonetheless. I named mine Amalthea.
Full Disclosure: I haven't actually read much Spider-Man, I'm more a DC reader. Carnage! (the exclamation point is apparently mandatory) was named by a Marvel-reading friend.
What are their names? Sometimes I like to theme name when I buy several slings of the same species. I've got RCF Rosies named "Apricot", "Mango", and "Peach", along with a pair of BCF A. seemanni named "Levis" and "Wrangler"
The closest I've had was a (tragically short-lived) A. moderatum...
Oh wow I totally forgot about that song.
But how will they know which one you're talking to when you call their name?
I suspect at least 60% of education tarantulas are named "Rosie".
I can't stand videos of any kind of "scary" animal set to scare chords and horror music. Makes me feel like the owner only keeps their spider/snake/ect to seem cool and edgy, without any appreciation for the animal itself.
On the other hand, classic stoner rock gets my seal of approval:
Rosie. Itsy. Shelob. Charlotte. I'm sure everyone here has noticed how commonplace particular names are among pet spiders. There's no way to get remotely accurate data among the global spider-owning population, but at the very least I'm very curious how many AB users have used these names.
Any...
Firstly, good on you getting your kid outta there until the OBT was found. Not everyone would be willing to admit that mistake to their spouse or family, for fear of having spider privileges revoked.
This isn't my story, but the from spider guy at my LPS: Once while unboxing, he got bit by a...
Mine have made extensive burrows with multiple entrances, but spend a lot of time out on the surface. I've found them to be more skittish and quick than my US Aphonopelmas. Are you sure the substrate isn't too damp? I just use a water bowl that I overflow occasionally, rather than actual moist...
