But if the tarantula is paralyzed and not able to move normally, I could see her releasing/laying eggs without spinning an egg sac. Maybe she has been trying to do that without success. Poor thing.
BTW, I just looked up a description of the tarantula hawk's sting to a human:
STUNG BY A...
I agree, except that if it is normal, why throw it out? I moistened, let it dry some, put feeders on it, now have it for most of my recent rehouses, all are doing well. I wasn't comfortable using it while it had the odor, but that odor faded in time. Thanks again, everyone, for sharing your...
I like the bricks. Storing 6-9 of them is a lot more space efficient than storing an equivalent amount of expanded coco fiber, peat or soil. And my Ts are in my small office at work!
Thanks a lot for all the replies. I've used various substrates, peat, top soil, sphagnum. I'm going to need a lot of sub and thought I'd coconut fiber a try. I find the bricks very convenient and very easy. I'll set up some crickets on the substrate and see how they do.
I bought several packs of three Ecoearth bricks on Amazon. Each three-pack was sealed by shrink wrap. I put the brick in a clean bucket, added water to one brick and it quickly swelled. I have a nice bucket full of good looking Ecoearth. BUT it has a smell, not an earth smell, more of a chemical...
14, one 10 year old P. irminia and 13 slings/juveniles :)
But I'm expecting at least 7 more this month.
Expecting:
P. regalis (regal jumping spider)
Set of 5 communal M. balfouri slings
Pampobetues sp. Machala
+ ? ;)
I also learned the hard way about what a bad idea it is to keep slings in even a small critter keeper. About 20 years ago, I had a GBB sling escape. I was keeping it at work, where we have insect cultures. About six months later, I found it, fat and happy, inside a sphinx moth breeding cage!
A great first spider is B. albopilosum, or curly hair T. They are docile, and don't get huge. They are not fast growers, but are pretty quick for a Brachypelma. They are not expensive and are widely available at different sizes. I raised one from a sling about 20 years ago, in 1997 or 1998, one...
My only regret is that I didn't order one or two more. I received "Myles MVP", P. subfusca in a very nice habitat. @Fear Not Tarantulas didn't mention the size of the P. subfusca slings, but mine looks to be a healthy 1.5", and is active and eating well. Tanya, is the P. subfusca HL or LL type...
@JBarbaresi this is what I have too! My first Pokies. Both are babies and I don't know if the P. subfusca is HL or LL - is there any way visually to tell the difference?
So far, with mine, the 1.5" P. subfusca (I've had less than a week) seems a bit more active and the 2" P. regalis (which I've...
Love her! I know now what one of my next ones will be! You have gorgeous Ts, Olan!
I also have a Pamphobeteus sp. Machala in order. ;)
Thanks for all the great suggestions! I think I have all I need - I decided to get a communal set of M. balfouri (5 more) as well as all the others mentioned...
My L. vioaceopes was about 7-8 inches, though I have read that they can grow larger. Reached that size in a little over a year for me.
I don't handle my Tarantulas much, but in my limited experience with 4 or 5, B. albopilosum is generally slow moving and docile, and reluctant to bite or...
Those are awfully nice! Thank you for the suggestion!
I had an OBT for years, really liked it a lot. That and H mac were my first baboons. I love them both, but at the moment, I'd like to explore some other interesting baboons. I'm getting S. balfouri and C. darlingi slings tomorrow.
There are so many. But one of my favorites is Lampropelma violaceopes. Beautiful, graceful (I love those long front legs), shades of lovely blue. Fast grower, good eater. Mine burrowed and made a cool tubular web coming out of the hole. Out enough that I got to see her, but she was much more...
P. cambridgei are gorgeous as is P. irminia. I raised a P. irminia sling to adult, and have had her over 10 years now. Both good eaters, out all the time, nice webbing but not excessive. Not any less beautiful than the Pokies, IMO.
Those are gorgeous! All yours? What species is the third one? Pamphobeteus antinous? Female? It is beautiful.
I'm still open for suggestions. Guess I'm not stopping at 2-4. I just placed an order with Fear Not Tarantulas yesterday. :) I will be receiving the following tomorrow:
Ceratogyrus...
