    Species Poecilotheria metallica

Now that she's a little bigger, she's out in the open more often.

@KezyGLA Yeah, I was hoping to get a better one but no flash had too much reflection off the glass and flash was--well--let's just say that was the clearest one I managed to get.

@KezyGLA If nothing else, female is always what I keep my fingers crossed for. ;)

    B. auratum

A few people in other threads said this one looked male; got a hopefully decent enough underside shot to tell for sure.

    Genus Brachypelma

My cute little b. auratum (looks bigger than it is in the pics; it's still pretty small, only about 3"):

So, I was given a b. smithi (warning for a spider in pretty poor condition)...

That's good to know, though I'm not sure how recently this one molted just due to the four similarly sized molts that were still in the tank.

Not mature yet, he's way too small. If he is male, I should at least have a few good years of growing before he hits that mature molt at least. I don't breed and usually hope for or just get sexed females, but, hey, free is free!

So, I was given a b. smithi (warning for a spider in pretty poor condition)...

True, but I always like to give mine the option to do so if they want to. If the option isn't there, you'll never know if that particular individual prefers to burrow or not. In the past, I've found that, aside from the one OBT I had that I'm pretty sure just legitimately was a ball of orange...

It may very well be, she said b. smithi but that's hardly proof as she apparently thought she was taking good care of it too.

So, I was given a b. smithi (warning for a spider in pretty poor condition)...

It still baffles me though. :) Like, even if you don't know what you're doing and bought an animal without looking up the specifics of that animal's general care, you should still at least know things like, "don't let the water dish dry up" and "remove dead food/waste from the enclosure" that's...

So, I was given a b. smithi (warning for a spider in pretty poor condition)...

Unsexed juvenile, about 3" legspan, came in a 10 gallon tank. Highlights include: - Abdomen so skinny it's almost a line. - Old molts in the tank. - Dead, dried out crickets everywhere (I counted about two dozen), and the only reason they weren't moldy is because... - ...the entire...

So, there's a house spider that's made a web in my p. metallica enclosure.

Oh ew, yeah that'd be a not fun situation. It's too cold to put it outside, but I suppose I could take it to the basement.

So, there's a house spider that's made a web in my p. metallica enclosure.

A 5" tarantula vs a pinkie nail sized house spider. If anything the house spider might end up a snack.

So, there's a house spider that's made a web in my p. metallica enclosure.

I'd noticed web strands on the leaves of the big live plant in there, but thought maybe the p. metallica was doing it as she's not yet so big that she can't climb on the leaves. When misting today I knocked what looks like a triangulate cobweb spider loose from a leaf and saw it crawl back up...

Lovely water spots on the acrylic, but this is honestly my favorite pokie pose. When I first saw pokies, this pose, for some reason, made me feel really uneasy and I still don't know why. It just looked...wrong, like a spider but not a spider. Now that I have pokies, I love seeing them sit...

Getting my T used to me

In the past, when I’ve had spiders that seemed hyper defensive, the first thing I did was look at their enclosure and determine: 1) If a species known to burrow or be terrestrial: Is the substrate deep enough? Many times it’s not. I like to keep my terrestrial tarantulas on a minimum of 10” of...

New pic of the p. rufilata because I'm just so pleased at how often it's calmly sitting out in the open for still being so small (only MAYBE 4").

My pacman frog failed to eat a few hornworms this winter and we got HUGE Carolina Sphinx moths out of it. They're more my mature male's size, but he doesn't eat much anymore, and this was before I got the pokies, so my t. plumpies FEASTED for a good 3 weeks; she got one, and I kept the others...

I'm gonna catch so many moths this summer just to watch the spiders 'fly'.

They're honestly not that big yet. The metallica is only about 4 1/2", and the rufilata is maybe 4 inches tops. Both still have a lot of growing to do, and I am so looking forward to seeing them get bigger.
