Orthoporus ornatus natural feed experiment.

Orthoporus ornatus natural feed experiment.

Saguaro wood almost totally consumed after a couple of weeks of feeding.
I hiked into a large superpod sunday night and the desert had been stripped clean of leaf litter and dead weeds in that area. I'm wondering if the superpods that I am finding are not the trailing edge of a large cleaning crew that is even bigger. Does the edge of the group have a wave of ravenous foragers? It is hard to say, a large superpod can cover 200 square miles of desert. The largest one I found was 10 miles north to south and about 20 miles wide (200 square miles). There were so many millipedes that it was impossible not to run over a few even if you were trying to go slow and avoid it. I have heard one account of a "river of millipedes," but it came from a naked old man with short term memory loss. The tip he gave me about the location turned out to be good but I haven't met anyone yet that can verify a mass migration or a river of millipedes. This project is starting to get more interesting. I wrote a story on the myriapods forum about my encounter with the naked old man in the desert if you want to read it.
