My mom bought me this new enclosure for when my Avics grow up. I am a bit worried because of the screen top, will it be a problem? If so how can I modify this cage to work for my tarantulas?
I agree with @Venom1080. It is more of an issue with terrestrials although there is still a chance they may get stuck. I use this exo terra to house my GBB and the taller ones for my arboreals. To stop them climbing on the lid I hotglue a very thin sheet of perspex/acryllic to the underside of the screen then poke holes for vents through all the gaps nearer the centre of the screentop. I leave an 2" from the sides unpoked so they would struggle to climb on the lid.
I'd still replace the screen with drilled plexi or acrylic. While it may be less of an issue, its still an issue, we've seen plenty of arboreals stuck in screens....but aside from that, it can cause too much ventilation, which can dry an enclosure unnaturally fast. The drilled plexi, while offering good venting, it also will prevent over-ventilation...a little restriction is good.
I have used those cages for many years now and I absolutely love them and have never had an issue with Boreal species terrestrial species I have had a couple of issues nothing major though as far as too much ventilation you can cover part of the screen with Saran wrap on the outside if you want to keep more humidity or even cut a piece of plexiglass and drop it in the top to cover half of the screen that's a trick that I use to keep the humidity up and that way there you can remove the plexiglass to control humidity
