Sold as "Rose Hair" by a dealer I rescued this beauty from who didn't even know the species liked it dry. My assumption is that it's a Grammostola Porteri. please examine carefully and leave your opinion.
The world spider catalogue lists them as two different species, (http://www.wsc.nmbe.ch/genus/3357/Grammostola) but people generally use the classifications porteri and rosea etc. just to differentiate between color forms of the G. rosea , further confusing everyone. If I was to foster a guess, I'd say this T in that respect is a G. porteri but not only am I color blind but also guesses don't help this hobby, and can lead to misinformation. Speculation also suggests that the differentiation between the species was started by people in the pet trade for reasons related to selling and capturing so many, and others have said and backed up that all color forms are present in a single rosea egg sac. So porteri's are either distinct genetically beyond appearance somehow or not applicable as anything but an alternate color form to G. rosea, and some would say is in fact the same tarantula fundamentally. I've also been told that porteris are larger and more docile than roseas, and you've undoubtably heard of psycho rosies that could back this claim circumstantially. I however, don't have any first hand information and would appreciate someone who does either corroberating or correcting me aswell. Rumors don't help anyone, and I'm no expert but I thought I'd share the general gist of what I've picked up.
It does look less vibrant than typical rosea colorations, but I've personally always had trouble distinguishing between the two. Philo's answer is definitely more informative on the issue. I've also found that whether or not my rosea/porteri (I always go back and forth on it) appears as either depends a lot on the lighting.
All in all and either way, though, a gorgeous T. Awesome to hear about the rescue I'm sure it'll be much happier in your care.
