You can avoid the white flare by taking this same shot at a slight angle. Just rotate the camera or flash 10 degrees in either direction and that should clear the shot up
Even I suspected male, as the dark area between the anterior book lungs has a dark spot in the middle in person. I looked at a bunch of other photos of females and their epigastric furrows seem to be pretty different in comparison.
