Zoe gave birth! (cavy pups) :o)

Our girl "Zoe", who we had gotten to keep our "Reeses" company,
turned out to be pregnant. (Surprise!)
I estimated how pregnant she was by behaviour and size,
and got everything ready for the new arrivals. She had two female pups.

Here they are.
Some pictures of when the babies were born, (paper shredding as litter)
and some of when they are 3 days old/today, (blue carefresh bedding)

Zoe is the one with white in her coat.
Reeses is the one who's coat looks like
Reeses peanut butter cups colors.

they are so cute. i have 2 guinea pigs, both girls. my kids want me to get a boy...told them 'NO". i know those kids of mine, they'd mix and match them and i'd end up with a bunch of new little guineas. and i'd have a hard time giving them up.
i did end up getting a boy today tho....but not a guinea...got a chinchilla boy...so i'm safe;P

You also can't breed guineas past a certain age without killing the sow. It's good you said no. :clap: They are cute when they are little balls of wild cowlicks running around the cage.

on her own, without assistance from a veteranarian, and always by c-section.
(Unless I'm mistaken after 18 months)
This is because the pelvic cavity fuses after a certain age and doesn't allow for enough
space for regular live delivery down the birth canal.
It is generally not recommended at all to even breed her past a certain age.
What's recommended , and I use the term loosely, since it isn't really ever recommended at all,
is to breed her after a certain age, but before a certain age as well.
One must know what one is doing.

Felicidades ( congratulations ) they sure are cute. I remember when I was young and kept these delightful animals as pets. The pics bring back memories. Enjoy them.

Awww Don't you love how they are born all ready to go? Female cavys need to breed before they reach 9 mo. of age or their pelvis fuses so they need c-sections to give birth. I wouldn't put rabbits and cavys together despite what the pet stores do. Rabbits are asymptomatic carriers of Bordetella and can infect cavys.

Zoe is now seven and a half months old.
I have read that the female should be bred before six months of age,
if she is to ever breed. After six months of age the symphysis pubis fuses,
but if she has been bred her body can handle a pregnancy better.
On the day we got Zoe, I knew that same night that she may be expecting.
I waited a week and her only weight gain was in the tummy. Then a week
after that I could feel what felt like little grapes in there. She was also very
sensitive to petting unless it was near her head.

I absolutely love that they are born and ready to go. Eating running and playing.
And the age is 10 months but what matters more is whether or not she was bred very young

Update with the pictures...
the larger of the babies (the darker one) was adopted out this past
weekend. She had just enough of Mama's milk.. They named her Kibbles... awww..

Very cute. This makes me miss my piggies. I had adopted a couple of special needs gpigs some years back. (I never really got into the habit of calling a gpig a 'cavy'. I always ended up calling them gpig or pig )
