I think someone added the light but in the deep sea truth is stranger than fiction IF it was a real light emitted by the shark it maybe a device to lure prey.. I believe the shark is real however. Even though I really think that light is just a hoax. That fish looked so sick and old. It was on its way out.

I wonder if this was a new species to science, or if they thought it was extinct like they thought the Coelacanth was extinct until they caught one?

Yeah the first time I saw the red light following the email's video I thought the same thing, and thought it looked too odd and strange and had never seen something like it. I was intrigued and wanted to ponder possible explanations for it but I hadn't thought of this...perhaps you're right and we would also need to consider this possibility since daylight does not reach such deep grounds, and we know some deep sea creatures do in fact emit an external light to attract prey. It wouldn't be that far fetched if such old creature had the capability to emit the same light in their throats or mouth to do the same.

The other day I got curious on the subject and started doing some research on this type of rare frilled shark in hopes I could find more info about this strange red light coming from within, but I found nothing on the subject:( The other possible theory I could only come up with, was the one I stated above that would be the obvious explanation for it IMO. Notice how openened all those reddish gills were, and since the shark's mouth and throat are kinda rosy and reddish also...it would explain how could the daylight enter the gills and illuminate that opening:?

Well we won't be able to tell for sure now that it's dead, but I find it fascinating all these deep sea creatures that are actually blind and have all these brilliant hunting skills maximized on their other senses to catch prey, or how wonderful it is to see other creatures that can emit a light and can produce electricity to some extent and lure their food close enough. Very interesting to observe, I wish there were more research vids about this.

I believe it was just the light penetrating through the sharks cheek/ gills area.
In the same way as pointing a bright LED style light through your finger.
Would be amazing if it was some kind of bioluminescent lure for prey!

Hm...seems to me, if it was on the verge of death, that would explain it coming closer to the ocean's surface, which would explain the increase of light (that, and whatever took its picture), which would explain the redness in its already-red mouth. Where's the problem here?

Just goes to show the ocean is still full of wonderful suprises. We have conquered the land but the sea still remains wild. Lets hope it stays that way.

Hello,

Those were some great links posted. That is one bizarre looking creature. I have no doubt the animal is genuine. The red we are seeing could be explaine dby any number of things. Perhaps in a few days more stories will come to light that will include autopsy images.
