I was wondering a while ago i had a mite out break in 2 of my tanks.when i tod my wife all she could ask was do they bite humans. I know that they can't really live in dry conditions but was just wondering. if within that time of escaping the tank and expiring. Will they bite or cause any problems for the keeper. or anyone in the house. just wanted to know to put her mind at ease if she hears it from others not just from me.

You could have her read this article, it gives some good information about mites in general, although it could possibly freak her out when she finds out there are more mights in the everyday home than you will find in a tarantula cage.

Interesting read there Suidakkra. The same question by the TS has been in my mind since I got into Ts. I have a daughter, roughly 2 years old. And the term "mites" gets me thinking that it might be harmful to my daughter, and if that's the case, although I really like my Ts, I may have to let them go.
Although I still google around for the answer to my question from time to time, I have yet to find the answer (I found this post in my searches). Maybe a little more searching perhaps.

The point I was making with that post, even if you did not have tarantulas, you will still have mites in your house regardless. Mites are everywhere on this planet. A biologist once stated that if you could somehow remove the Earth , you would have a perfect outline of the planet, and all the land mass made out of mites.Interesting read there Suidakkra. So getting rid of your T's will not remedy the possibility of a mite infestation within your home, considering there are probably mites there regardless. I am not a entomologist, nor a disease control specialist, but I think removing your T's in fear of a mite infestation is rather, unnecessary, but of course an understandable choice since you have concerns about your child, that is totally your decision.
Good husbandry and care of the T's enclosures limits a total infestation, and like mentioned previously, mites are around regardless, with or without T's.

Yeah, noted on the point that mites are everywhere, unseen or not. We have dogs, but they are in a kennel. We have love birds, but are in the bird house. We have plants in the backyard.
Just thinking about me introducing a specific mite inside our house that comes from the Ts themselves or the feeders that I have. That is controllable. However, having this thought in mind makes me more committed in proper care to avoid infestation.
I'm interested in knowing the specific mite that infests on Ts, and how it affects humans, or if it does or not.
