So today I looked in to check on my assassin's only to find that one of them was dead, being eaten by crickets. Up until now it was eating great and acting totally normal...nothing wierd and a nice clean take so no mites or other parasites either. I'm so upset as my assassins are no doubt my favorite inverts. At least I still have one, but still. =(

As if that's not bad enough, the other day I found my C. vitattus scorp dead too.

Umm.... You do realize that non-native assassins are illegal right?

You might want to ask for this thread to be deleted if they are indeed the non-native kind, the USDA/APHIS have been cracking down on this kinda thing lately...

Yes I do... if you read my post I never said they were non-native. Thanks for the reminder though. It really bites that they wont let us keep the fun kinds, though I find all the assassin species quite fascinating.

Sorry, after the other topic posted I automatically jumped to the non-native conclusion.

Sorry to hear about both the assassin and the scorp.

It's all good... a common mistake I'm sure. Thanks for the condolences though. I know they're just bugs but it still hurts =( .

I don't know if it's the cold as it's been on the warmer side here lately, and they've done fine when it was colder than it is now. I'm so confused :( .

Good luck with your eggs though... I hope you get something from them

In reference to legalities of assassin bugs, please check out this link:

Check out my post as well and follow that link, and the other it leads to.

As for ZoSoLp510's problem, sometimes hungry crickets or mealworms will turn the tables on an assassin bug (usually a nymph). My suggestion is to leave food in with assassins for no longer than a half hour. In a small space, if the assassin becomes scared of the food, it will refuse to eat. If you have a big tank, then you dont really need to worry, but its better to be safe...
