Why did my crickets die?

Hi

I got 100 crickets and put them in my cricket container. As usual, I put some dog food in there (they love it). I thought I'd pour a small amount of water in the cage. A few hours later, a lot of them are dead. Why? The ones that aren't dead seem alive and well, can I still use them to feed my Ts?

if you didnt drown them they might not have had enough heat or over crowded i wouldnt see anything wrong with feeding the live ones to your Ts as long as you have been picking out the dead i would suggest switching to roaches..crickets die to easy and stink to much :D

I hear you, some of my crickets also seem to die for no reason despite they have good food, enough space within the egg crates and the water gel cubes :wall:

Argh! Crickets suck, carry nasty diseases and chirp too much. Can't wait to get more t's so I can invest in a dubia colony and get rid of them once and for all.

To answer your q, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to use the ones that aren't dead. You could also feed the expired ones to slings depending how fresh these are and they'll gladly eat them.

Crickets are nice and so far the best food for reptiles at least.
But You should never feed them with dog food, provide humidity and after all You should be sure the culture You buy not suffer from the viral infection like nematosis etc.

What's wrong with dog food, my crickets love it and have a decent mortality rate.

This is depends on the kind of food and the exact series (dunno how to call it in english - meaning the portions from which one food produced and packed and another - other portions of product) of the same kind.
Some dog and cat food contains "attractantes" - which can be harm for invertabrates, some - not.
In any way, carrot so far is the best vegetable wet food, and rat's combi-food is best as the protein source.
