How does a 1/4" A. veriscolor escape from a 2" vial with only pinholes in the lid?;P

When I feed, I ALWAYS make a visual before closing the lid.... I see one little T and one little crick so I close the lid. If I DON'T see one little T and one little crick, I DON'T close the lid.

I asked my sons, "Not Me", age 9 and "Wasn't Me" age 12 if they were showing off my pretty sling to their friends. I interrogated all 9 little boys who came over this weekend. Such little darlings, they are ALL innocent.

Short of posting the sign below all around my T enclosures, does anyone have any ideas about where the little Ts go when they disappear?

Hi MizM, Sorry about your little one excaping. Hopefully you will

find it. Hopefully it doesn't get eaten by other spiders or

Tarantulas. Just keep a look out for warm places(but here in Cali. everywhere is a warm place)

oh dear, I dunno what to say.

Hopefully you'll find it because versi colors are so cool.

the pic is funny by the way.

have a nice day

Do you have any substrate in the container? Maybe your little versi decided to do something unexpected and burrow? Hmm, maybe check the upper reaches of the room it was in. As you know, arboreals go up. Maybe it could be on a nice plant? Or in some curtains?

Otherwise, what does your intuition tell you? Do you feel like your kids did indeed show off the baby and lose him? Now, I'm not a parent, so I don't want you to be insulted for me to presume to give you advice because I am doing this for compassionate reasons only, not to cast aspersions on your skills in any way.

If you feel like your children really did do it, maybe you could try a different approach to asking them again. Tell them how sad you are at losing your baby T, and ask them how they would feel if they lost a special pet and never knew what happened to it.

I remember far too much about being a kid - they can be self-centred, and unreasonably afraid of what will happen to them if they screw up, not realizing that 'facing the music' is bad, but it must be done, and it doesn't have to be the end of the world to admit you made a mistake. If I had opened the jar when I was little, I might have said it wasn't me, but if the person came to me and told me they were sad, and got me to think about my feelings in a similar situation, I would have been moved to tell the truth.

Best of luck to you, in any case. I hope you find your versi webbed up in a nice warm spot and ready to come home after an adventure.

Wow, Greensleeves, you are insightful! I tell my boys over and over "Lie and it's a spanking, tell the truth and you will receive a MUCH lesser punishment!" But... they still lie!

There was vermiculite in the container, and I dumped it out (carefully!:) ) and spread it out and went through it with a fine-toothed comb! And, every little dot on the wall is subject to inspection!

In case y'all aren't aware, I have a major sense of humor, and my kids enjoy the little sign. It wasn't meant to scare or threaten them in any way!

Was there a cricket in the vial at the time? Did a cricket maybe eat the poor little guy? I remember being at a petstore in toronto and the tarantulas were housed very poorly and in some you could literally see tarantula parts in the jars but no tarantula and a few crickets... hmm wonder what happened there, needless to say i left that store and didnt buy anything. Im not saying that you house your tarantulas bad or anything like that it just made me think of that. Anyways hope you find your little Versi, I know how upset I would be if I lost my little one cause they are just too cute.

Wow TheDon, I didn't know they could actually EAT a T!!! The cricket I fed it with wasn't very big.... but if it was really hungry... do you think.... oh kaka.... the CRICKET was still in there...

Oh, it's too horrible to think of a CRICKET eating a T! You've given me a really tear-jerking visual!:( But, I guess it COULD happen!

*EDIT* Oh dear Don, do you know what this means? Now, before closing the lid, I will have to SEE the T, SEE the cricket, and SEE the cricket in the Ts mouth!! Feeding time is going to take FOREVER!!!:D

Sorry, it was pretty disturbing to see at a petstore. I cant say for 100% sure that they ATE it but a couple of them only had pieces of leg in the jar and no Tarantula but there were like 4 crickets.

Unfortunatly crickets eat ANYTHING. They have been known to munch on anything that doesnt eat them, from lizards to snakes, to small inverts and freshly molted spiders. Our pet store used to give them to you stapled in brown paper sacks, but, I'm assuming, from the number of complaints of them escaping into homes and cars them have swtiched to plastic fish bags. They just eat through the paper and presto.... "Hey I thought I had twenty crix in here!!"

I really dont like crickets, they stink, they are voracious eaters and escape easily, but the only other things available in my area are meal worms.....

Sorry about your lost sling, and maybe it didn't get eaten. It could have just as easily escaped.......

Today I fed my smallests s'lings, the store was out of pin heads, so I sucked it up and squished the heads(alot better than their first feed, chopped in half yuk)of small ones. They both did fine, neat to see them pounce on a dead thing tho.
as far as eating a T, crickets are like roaches they will eat virtually anything.
