They do like to lay in substrate sometimes other beetles will eat those eggs though. I took a pieces of wood and drilled lots of little holes about 1/8" wide in it and they lay their eggs in the holes of the wood which is more like what they do in nature and the other beetles cant get to the eggs in the holes
