So I am thinking of finally establishing a colony of B. dubia....start off with a mixed set of 100. What size tank would be good for that? I know a lot of folks use plastic bins, but I was thinking more along the lines of an aquarium since it will probably be sitting in my display area with everything else and don't want the eye sore of a plastic bin.

Aquariums are crap for breeding roaches, the silicone along the edges are perfect for the babies to crawl up and out. A friend had a lot of trouble getting his colony going until I pointed this out and showed him a couple babies hiding under his tank.

A 10 gallon would probably be good with a lot of egg crates and stuff in it.

Just buy a rubbermaid bin. Aquariums let in a lot of light and I found my colonies seemed to fare better when placed in something that was totally dark. And the babies will have nothing to climb up, so maintaining a vaseline bead, or whatever, will not be necessary.

no light

They don't like light. Period. Keep them dark, warm, and step back and watch them breed! Rubbermaid bins rock. If you want to have some on display, make a tank, but might want to use red light to view, or cover the tank with red cellophane.
