This is another really tiny(about 1/16 of a inch total length)spider found crawling on the wall of my classroom today. After "securing" it in a condiment cup supplied by the cafeteria for that purpose, much to the relief of my arachnophobic students, I proceded to observe it awhile and take a few Macro shots, before releasing it in a secluded corner. One observation: this little guy was a master at playing "possum", and at the slightest touch, or even just my approach while it was in the plastic condiment cup, it would curl up, fall onto its side and look very convincingly like a piece of dirt. Now, I'd seen adult female Lactrodactus mactans do that, and I've seen Common House Spiders(Achaearanea tepidariorum) ball up while on their webs, but they would move if touched, while this one would steadfastly play dead until it seemed the coast was clear, then miraculously "come back to life" and sprint away. When I uploaded the pics onto my computer, I realized that the abdominal markings were different from the House Spiders I've found, too, and now I am wondering if this was not an immature L. mactans, after all. It's an old building, with lots of cabinets in this particular room that have not been cleaned out in ages, and I have seen webs that match those of L. mactans. Anybody want to try to ID this little guy?

It is a Steatoda grossa. Very harmful to ants and other "pests" indoors :)
