I was just wondering, is a 2.5 inch sling big enough for a small waterdish or would a bottle cap be better? I want to do what ever I can to prevent drowning.

First, what kind of sling do you have? That might help. Is it an Avic or another aboreal species?

It's a P.regalis so I know it wont drink from it much. However I'd just like to take the proper precautions.

I just pour water right onto the substrate for ones that size.
I usually give my guys a water dish when they are big enough for a medium sized KK.

A 2.5 incher could use a small plastic lid for a waterdish. Something like a plastic pop bottle lid would do. It might help to put a small stone in the lid too if you're afraid of drowning.

Otherwise, you can always spray the sides of the enclosure with water and the tarantula will drink the water droplets.

My tarantula is a bit smaller and I have one of those eco-friendly shallow water bottle caps in there with her, haven't had any problems. They're much more shallow than a normal cap. Be sure to get the little plastic bits off of the rim that remain on there from the seal if you do use a cap of some sort.

This would be my suggestion as well. I would go ahead and introduce a water dish at the time of the next molt. I would skip over the bottle cap and just do the dish. I'd only fill it about halfway though and continue with some light misting until yet one more molt. At that time a full water dish should be just fine for your P. regalis.

At 2" mine get a bottle cap from a poweraid bottle, the black ones. Gallon milk jug caps work well too, the screw on type.

no it won't, morio on the other hand.. they bite. don't steal the thread agin. i'll call the forum police :p

slings can have regular water, in an exo terra feeding dish, not water dish. the feeding dish is far shallower and if a few pebbles are placed in it, there is an easy escape for stranded spiders and their stupid food.

The only thing that you should be worried about drowning is the prey. Since Ts do not actively breathe, it would take something like soap to break the water tension to actually make it so a T can drown. It is more likely for them to suffocate, but even that is not really a concern.

At that size we give them a soda lid. Sometimes they leave it alone and we can keep it filled. ;) If they don't we just pour water into the substrate for them to drink.

I have P.regalis slings about that size. Both have little shallow plastic caps from galon milk containers. Next they'll get Gatorade bottle caps.
