Looks like a Morning Cloak and they hibernate over the winter. The furry stuff are just modified scales.Flipped over a rotting log today to find this guy sitting there. The legs were strongly attached to the log and its wings were very hard to open. Its face is taken over by some kind of furry material. Any ideas on what happened?

As @NathanJBoob said, that's a morning cloak butterfly (Nymphalis antiopa) which hibernates in crevices and whatnot. If you were poking at it, it was probably lethargic from the cold.Flipped over a rotting log today to find this guy sitting there.
