I’ve never seen my T’s mouth look like this before? Is it wet? or dry? She last ate about a week ago and she’s lower tha usual for an A. avic, near her water bowl.

Should I be worried?

Potentially nematodes...if that is the case there is not much to be done about it. Keep us updated, I'm sorry your T is having a bad time.

What did it look before, that pic isn’t in focus for small areas

I’ve had Avics come down to drink

Is it the crusty stuff around the whole mouth part? I dont know if its just the resolution of the photo but it does look a bit icky… usualy its hairy and silky…

this is kind of scary.

sometimes there are digestive fluids that come out. But this photo might not be doing it justice.

more photos might be helpful.

Are you able to get any clearer pics? Do you have a magnifying glass you could get a closer look with? On the off chance you have a microscope and she’ll let you swab, that’s you best option.

if they get it in a small catch cup, with holes, they can get a swab. Of course, its all about how a keeper is comfortable doing this.

Hard to Tell from one Still Photograph, Video/ More Pics would be helpful.
Might be Critters, it's a Crap Shoot.
Best wishes that Avic avic isn't infected.

If you have other arthropods, immediately isolate this animal. It could be parasitic nematodes. How long have you had this specimen? Unfortunately a lot of Avics are wild caught and have a higher probability of being infected with parasites. Unfortunately, many of these nematodes are not visible to the naked eye. If you want to know what's really going on, it would be helpful to get a swab of this spider's mouthparts to view under magnification. Sadly if these parasites are present, there aren't any known effective treatments and you may end up having to euthanize.

Should I pinch grab her to swab it? I’m not sure the best way to get a better look/capture more clear pictures

That's one way to do it, but you could also get her underneath a catch cup and sneak a q-tip under the rim to brush against her mouth. That's probably what I would try first. If she's lethargic it would probably be pretty simple to do. If she's up against the glass, you could also try taking a closer look with a magnifying glass if you have one. Easier said than done but try to minimize stress if at all possible.

It doesn’t look like worms to the eye, it looks crusty or scabbed almost
It does look crusty, or insert whatever word here. It gives me uncomfortable goosebumps.

It doesnt look cleaned.

To compare and explain what i meant, this is my p murinus dcf. Yes the pictures is bad, but its all cleaned and brushed well. Like tarantula has been maintaining itself. After it eats yeah theres tons of fluids, but it gets cleaned.

Yes hers usually looks like that here’s a pic of it normally….
I don’t think it’s nematodes though….

Something is going on. Keep an eye on it.

check pedipalps. Can your tarantula “use” them. “slowly” shake enclosure to get spider to move, youll see if she uses her pedipalps to stabilize herself.

if she is sticking around water bowl, she could be drinking a lot. Nematodes do make taranatulas hover near their bowls

notice any smells that are not as usual in enclosure?

how has recent feeding been?

there are many things to consider. I hope its just a case of drinking and regurgitation.

Just tried it looks like she used them to stabilize. I did rehouse her yesterday to give her fresh water, clean the poop off the walls, etc. Now she isn’t by the water bowl now but is pretty low in her enclosure. She’s not on the ground but on the wall only about an inch above the substrate

Atleast, using the pedilpalps is a good sign, for now.

keep changes to a minimal at this point. Add tiny droplets of water to web or enclosure side if possible.

watch and wait. Monitor. Nothing else you can do at this point.

do keep us informed, as this progresses, please. We need to learn too. And i really hope its nothing and everything works out well.

If she does not have enough canopy at the top of enclosure, you can add that.

Sorry, this is exactly the look, of an infection with nematodes and bacteria + yeasts.
Unfortunately i can see this often at the preserved specimens which i get from other people.
its what i believe as well. But she doesnt think its worms. I didnt want to push it.

do you have experience with fungal infections in tarantula? Like ringworm? If its even possible? We have a member on the board who is having die offs

i included a snap shot of her situation. I hope she won’t mind. Its just since you seem to have experience with nematodes, im hoping you might have seen this too.
