a few months ago i was taking a walk around a state park in southern PA.. think it was back in mid December... i found these weird bugs that almost look like moths (or even fleas) except they don't have wings there to small to be tussock moth and i found males and females, some of the females being gravid at the time of collecting.. i was surprised to find them active in the winter like they were (some were mating )

i found them in the cracks of tree bark.. that i thought was oak.

i sorta think these are snow fleas (Hypogastrura sp ?)

the largest i collected was about 1/4th of an inch long

i would try to get pics but these are to small to make an attempt lol

Yup, sounds like one of the winter Collembola. Look at the head though, if it has an elongated downward snout it is probably Mecopetera:Boreidae which come out at the same time.
