It turned out a snakefly—a living fossil dating back to the Jurassic—was pupating inside one of the bamboo sticks I used for Patty Black's enclosure. Creepy. Someone in the movie industry needs to blow this up to Godzilla proportions and put it on the big screen.

During a sort of false spring here, it emerged and, of course, the black widow went for it. Long story short: She ended up losing her left front leg during the conflict. Next time I'm gonna do what I used to do with perches I made for my parrots: I'm going to wrap wood in foil and bake it in the oven. That not only kills insects, but pretty much anything that could be a problem. My mother only uses poison in special circumstances (such as a black widow infestation on the patio), so I thought the bamboo was safe. Not exactly, huh?

My black widow still has a few moults left before she is fully grown. How many moults does it take for a new leg to grow as much as it's going to? Are moults more dangerous for spiders that are replacing lost limbs?

Aren’t they predatory? I’m pretty sure they are
The molt is not dangerous.
Thanks for the info. One more thing: I'm wondering about her feeding schedule. I want her to have time to regrow the leg, but she'll need energy to do so. She last fed on the 13th and lost her leg on the 18th. She ended up eating her own leg (waste not; want not), but there wasn't much "meat" on it. I'm wondering if I should offer her a small cricket soon or wait another week or two. After what happened to my last widow, I'm concerned about overfeeding, but I'm thinking she needs energy to grow a new leg.

You can feed her when you want, it's not directly post molt, so it doesn't matter much.
