Just a short survey

1. How much is your collection worth? ~$5,750 (Not including slings)

2. How much have you invested?
-Spiders: $3584 (Give or take a few cents)
-Supplies: ~$275 (Most supplies are paid through store credit)
-Other:_____

3. If you breed/sell, how much have you returned in profit?
$423 cash (And some change after tax)
$627 total store credit (Various pet stores)

4. How much money have you lost due to unforeseen circumstances?
~$621

5. How much is the upkeep of your collection per month?
$75 (Just food)
Every three months: Cage cleaning - ~$233

To me, my collection is priceless. I trade and sale slings (and sometimes juvies/adults) to a couple nearby LPS. Most will only offer store credit, which I''m fine with (I come in and check on the ones I sale/trade them weekly). I ran out of room back in july due to so many tarantulas. They filled an entire bedroom and bathroom (bathtub and all), I started working with communities to downsize... and it's worked out well so far (All Avics and Pokies and Pterinochilus species [The later was recently sold en bulk]). My communities are always bustling with cricket activity, fed twice a week with a small colony of roaches in each to eat the bolus balls to minimize cleaning. MM's meet the females and remain with them until they expire.. sometimes 3 males to one female. Only one loss thus far (P. pederseni colony fail due to a buisness trip.. they weren't fed enough. The piggies ate too much). At least a gravid female survived. Most the value comes from slings en bulk at warehouse prices ($3-$10 per sling en bulk that they sale for $15-$50).. or a swarm of Avics or the army of B. smithi/B. emilia/B. boehmei (the latter is thanks to a dealer snafu). Have to take into consideration that at least 85% of my Ts are female as well (not counting slings of course).

The lost cost was having to give away about 17 Ts within 24 hours of recieving a message.. BrettG and his wifey were nice enough to drive down to SoCal from Arizona to pick quite a few up while I was on detachment :) They all went to great homes!

hey i have a question for you peoples with larger, more valueable collections.

do you or can you/should you insure your Ts? like if a fire or theft or something happened, could you get insurance for that?

It may fall under your Home Owners policy if you own your own home.

May be a clause in there but you'll have to estimate the worth and add the values to the policy so they know about it I would think.

Depends on the policy carrier. The simple answer is: Yes, you can insure them with everything else in your house. However, the more they're worth, the more it'll cost ya monthly or the higher the deductible will be. I can pretty much gaurantee that Ken has some sort of insurance policy. He'd be the best info on that subject!

Mine are insured through homeowners.. though I do not own a home, I rent.

Haha I think it is best not disclosing how much my collection is worth in Inverts, Verts, or Supplies. Lets just say a lot.

-Supplies: __ $40
-Other:_____ $30

3. If you breed/sell, how much have you returned in profit? N/A

5. How much is the upkeep of your collection per month? Probably about $10- I'm still experimenting with converting stuff into T enclosures and most of my collection is young so they're being upgraded as needed.

Very cool survey. It's interesting to actually see these numbers. Also amazing how much my collection has grown in value since I started in the hobby only 14 months ago.
