....and recaptured

They should make usumbara chasing an olympic sport. I just spent 40 minutes chasing down mine. I was doing some maintainence picking out a bolus and the little monster molted last week and finally pushed its molt outside its burrow entrance so I figured I'd get it too. I got ahold of the old exoskeleton with the tweezers and the shed was stuck to some webbing and when I started to pull it out the usumbara did warp factor 10 out of its burrow , up the inside of the jar and back down the outside of the jar and made a drop for freedom in the half a blink of an eye. I chased it around my desk, under a pile of shoes, back out to a pile of junk I should have thrown out a long time ago. I thought I had it trapped under a cup and slid a lid underneath but it squeezed out while lifting it up and moving it and dropped down into a trashcan. I had to dig my way down through about 2 cases of empty soda cans till I found it. I had the camera near by and figured I should take one last picture incase I didn't catch it or hurt or killed it in the subsequent cature attempt. Fortunately it must have been tired(I know I am) and it sat very still while I picked up the can and shook the demon back into its pickel jar. It didn't bite me but I'm feeling dizzy from the chase

I'm getting my little terror today :) Looks like you have to be ready for anything when opening their enclosures!!!

Glad you caught your T and it's back home and both of you are safe! hehe

Its a nerve wracking experience but once you do manage to get it back its a real sense of accomplishment. They are quick and can sqeeze into some very tight places. I'm just glad it didn't climb into one of those soda cans.

Grats on the successful safari! Worst speed demons I ever had was H. maculata (not counting pink toes cause they're relatively harmless, but there was one time.....!) . Had one that was about 1.5" that I had to chase all over the tub once or twice to change it's enclosure!! Mase me pretty nervous, lol!!

As for the pink toe, I was trying to coax one out of it's enclosure with the handle of a fly swatter once and it spooked, and in the blink of an eye had gone up the flyswatter and about 2/3 of my arm and was sitting almost to my shoulder deathly still as if staring at me questioningly!

I've always had this litle cartoon thought of that occasion as an animation with the spider saying to the startled owner in a terrified cartoonish voice: "HEY DAD!! SOMETHING TRIED TO GRAB ME!" :p

I'm beginning to wonder if a "moat" wouldn't be a good idea!! You know, putting their enclosures in a larger dish with water in it.... but then they'd probably learn to pole vault too! Gotta love 'em!!=D

i had to pack one once (the one i sent to jeff) and the little beast bolted on me. similar experience to yours really, took the better part of an hour to catch. took of to the underside of the table, dropped to the floor, then up a wall.
