Eastern Redback Salamander, Plethodon cinereus. Found under several logs and rocks on a walk today.

This guy had no tail. He's one of the darker morphs i found.

Heres some info on them: http://scf.rncan.gc.ca/subsite/glfc-amphibians/plethodon-cinereus

The spots on the sides with the red stripe is very appealing to me, that combined with the very slimy shine makes these perfect subjects for some illustrations. I am going to add them to my list of ambitions.

Does anyone here keep these or know how to. I find them interesting, especially because they don't have an aquatic stage. So breeding sounds fairly easy. Any knowledge would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a million

I left them, glad i did too, It's illegal to collect and remove any native species here in Ontario.. made me a little sad to hear.

Ah, I didn't know that.

Well, it's still a lot of fun to photograph stuff like that out in the wild, so I'm still jealous. :}

Nice pics, Kruggar. I had some for awhile, but they ate inconsistently & eventually died.

H., I think yours is a Batrachoceps sp...it looks very different from the western reds that I catch here...maybe B. minor?

I find both of them all the time. To the point they start annoying me. lol. I go out looking for other stuff like garter snake. Oddly enough I find no garter snake but I find both of those including the black one(dusky salamander?) by the hundreth. I found once an albino snake... I think it may have been a released species cause it was behind a kindergarden schools forest.

I sorta just used to walk in there before. But it got so boring(small wood), and it was full of poison ivy. I started calling it Poison Ivy forest. lol.... because there would be sooo much of that crud every where you walked it was there.

I got poison ivy like 6x-9x the worst one was on my face and outter throat. had hard time breathing and eating.

Well anyways. Good find. I found a rarity yesterday. A leopard frog. Where i live in nj. You rarely find those Obv. i took em. Though they have alot of tadpoles of leopard frogs. Because too big to look like a toad tadpole and too small to be a bullfrogs tadpole. I caught 2 baby bull frogs yesterday(newly morphed).

And I think I saw a new species of fish... I couldn't grab it in time. I got stuck in a thorn bush..... Ouch... It was pleco looking but it was orange with black spots. it swam away fast.

SandDeku, I've seen you on here a lot, and you seem to keep everything under the sun, I'd love to get some shots of the setups you have, or even your pet room ;) ;)

I've kept two colonies, I keep them in humid enclosures with soil and lots of wood/rocks for hides and I keep them cool. I wait til night and feed them fruit flies and springtails. They do fine in captivity, but I have never had them breed.

ill try eventually oh and I don't keep "everything" though I wish I could. :p I'ved kept other stuff in the past but some without yielding success and much after it failed I learned what I did wrong. Which sucks tbh. Insect hobbies though are pretty "Simple" and one can have over a 100 insects and it's still not as expensive as owning something like a dog. lol. I plan expanding more on "bugs" and maybe a bit more fish. But not expanding on stuff like amphibians and reptiles. lol.

it is fun catching dozens of different species of salamanders in the wild... but I miss catching cottonmouths and copperheads and other reptiles.

I should be getting a new camera in a couple of months. Maybe by then ill be able to post some pictures. I'm just trying to make my tanks into masterpieces before I even show them. I guess I like to show only what I feel proud about. xD My tanks look too regular right now. lol.

Haha, I find them all the time :D These pics are decent at best and Kruggar's pics spank mine. My cam is a simple Panasonic dmc-zs6 and I am not very knowledgeable with anything related to photography lol.

I'm jsut using a Nikon coolpix, its a simple point and shoot, and the macro is very sticky, but what I do it get a simple 6" tripod, and use that to stop my shaky hands from ruining the shot (as usual) the tripod makes all the difference. :D, Love the pic BTW
