well a tripod is handy to eliminate 'shaking' . also i use a tripod if im taking several pics of the same 'background' with diff things in the foreground - that way the background will be the same in all pics - try doing that without a tripod
you will need a tripod if your cam has a timer so you can run back and get yourself in a picture, you will need a tripod if you are taking long exposures such as moon or star pictures.......if you have a camcorder a tripod is handy at birthday parties, christmas, etc. so you just set it up and get in the action.
