Avics are pretty good at sensing movement and vibration from prey. My avic is usually about 5 inches from the cricket when it will notice it and pounce. You shouldn't have to use tongs to feed.

patience is a virtue in this hobby, but ultimately spider will always have more patience then we will ever have
Amen! lol This is a valuable life lesson my Ts have taught me haha

My 4" avic is one of my favourite Ts to watch catch food, she's actually very fast when gunning for the cricket. Once I was showing her to a friend and went to tongue...er, tong feed her :)D) and she jumped from the wall, caught the cricket off the tongs in mid air and landed on her log. My friend was like "THAT was awesome!!"

It may be easier to grab a cricket with your hands and then place it in your Tongs. I wonder if Tong feeding makes it more likely for a T to strike objects other than food. Will you or do you handle your Avic?

I have found that Avics dont really make use of a waterdish either. It helps with humidity, but honestly isnt needed with some proper husbandry. I assure you, if the sub is damp enough you will never see it use its dish. They tend to drink water from the side walls of the enclosure, or from the water that drips off of/pools up on the leaves
Both my AF A. avic and A. azuraklaasi drink from their waterdishes ;) I don't mist at all, just the waterdish and both spiders are totally fine, healthy, act normal, eat and behave like it's normal for them.

@OP: You don't -have- to. You can, but it's not a necessity.

Someone should design a set of tongs or tweezers specifically made for picking up feeders. The should be dexterous and delicate enough not to crush a bug, with rubber coated tips for traction.

Well as I said I left the cric in overnight, and when I got up this morning I found my lil avic with it tucked up under his fangs, nomming away. So, issue solved I guess. :D

I'm still going to try to get better at tong feeding, just because I'd sort of like to, but it's good to know he doesn't need me to be pro at it.

I only have two tarantulas, I don't really want to set up a roach colony for just the two of them. If I had more, I might, but it seems like a ton of work. Plus roaches creep me out. x_x

this is true, but you can always use getting a roach colony as an excuse to getting more Ts :) on a side note I think pet store really need to look into selling feeder roaches.

XD I would LOVE to use that as en excuse to buy more Ts. Trust me, if I didn't live with my parents I'd have at least 3 more already. However, I'm living with my folks while I go through college and they have a two-tarantula limit. x__x

But yeah, if my LPS sold roaches I would totally feed those instead! I really wish they sold them, too.

Haha hopefully they'll become more interested in Ts as you have and let you keep more, I also had a limit of 3 at first, then it became a limit of 7, and now I have 8 Ts =P

I also want to give roaches a go, however my family does not want roaches in the house which makes me laugh really seen as most of them love my Ts lol

I would use tongs, that is what I do for my Pink Toes. Pick the Cricket up with your hands and put it in the tongs by the very back of it. Let it move around by the Pink Toe, and let him or her get it! :) I use tongs to make sure they get it, if they don't want I know!
