"Inanimate objects don't have mythical powers?" Humanity has spent thousands of years carefully honing superstitions, charms, talisman, potions, & chants to keep all sorts of unpleasant supernatural beings from getting into mischief.

You forgot crucifixes, holy water, rosary beads, communion chalice and wafers. Can't forget all that good stuff if you want to talk about people falling for the idea that inanimate objects have power.
