THis is my way:

Slings: Under 1.5"
Juvies: 2" and/or have adult color.
Sub-adult:1-2 molts away from maturity
Adult: Mature, and usually ready to breed.

Thank you very much. That part was eluding me, I figured it was apart of molts.

It's not a certain number, I go by average size. Plus, some tarantulas mature at earlier ages then we think. It's just a bunch of estimantes. For example, If I had a 4.5" B.smithi I'd call it sub-adult because the average size for an "adult" B.smithi is 5".

If you bred and raised spiderling from an eggsac, you'd also know what instar they are at and such so you can go more accurately from there.

What is a instar. Is it just another way of saying stage

Pretty much, eggs > postembryos > 1st instar > 2nd instar > 3rd instar...etc

I might be missing something though, but instars are basically like stages. Molt after molt.
