Surgery for my "older" dog coming up

In one week from today my older dog "Simon" will be undergoing surgery again. I'm already so worried about it that it's physically making me sick. He's an almost 10-year old Bernese Mountain Dog, nick-named "Face". :)

He's had health problems and ailments throughout his entire life, yet he's been hanging in there, despite his odds. :(

Other than being somewhat dysplastic in his hips, he's got severe arthritis, several lipomas and countless sebaceous cysts, one of which has grown into a tumor (again). We've had one of those removed 3 years ago when it had turned into an oozing mess the size of a goose egg. However, during the first surgery attempt my boy flat-lined. :( My vet brought him back, and 2 weeks later the procedure was done by using local anesthesia and gas. It worked.

Well, one of his cysts has once again reached astronomical proportions (on his shoulder), and he's been on antibiotics now for 1 week, in hopes of shrinking it somewhat before the surgery is done next Wednesday. It hasn't shrunk it much, but let me tell you that thing STINKS. By stink I mean there's this horrific, foul, sweet-smelling strong disgusting odor which reminds me of dead tissue. The smell is so compulsive that I honestly get nauseous if he lays by my leggs.

Today I had to run some errands, and when I came home I smelled "it" immediately. I nearly threw up. I've been doing warm, wet compresses several times a day - ever so gently so not to make it any worse.

Even though I know dogs noses are SO much better than ours, the stench doesn't seem to affect him the same way it affects me. As a matter of fact Simon's been doing great. :) I am having my hands full with keeping my other Berner away from his "boobie", as he constantly wants to clean it for him.

Everyone, please wish us luck for next Wednesday. I think I'll be going to the doctor on Monday to ask for some "tranquilizers" - otherwise I'll have a nervous breakdown after dropping Simon off.

Here he is, in case you'd want to know why he's called "Face". :)

awww I'm so sorry, and he is one handsome guy there. My 10 year old cat is going to have to be put down because of cancer. Its right next to her anus and my grandmother doesn't want to have to go through another cancer victim. Our rott. had throat cancer and we had to put her down about three years ago.

I hope everything goes ok with the surgery!!

I'll be keeping Face and you in my thoughts and sending warm wishes your way.
I have two dogs myself and have had 5 cross the rainbow bridge. I know how hard it is when older ones have to go through surgery. But never anything like surgery after a bad situation like the last experience you had.
Best wishes. Fingers & toes crossed.

Both Gixxer and I wish Simon all the luck in the world!

I hope you hold up well also. If you seriously need anxiety meds, some doctors will give you a sample of Xanax. It works great for me when I go through stuff like that. (Like when Gixxer gets spayed next month.)

Thank you all so much. Your support is more appreciated than I can put into words.

Marie, I had my Golden cross rainbow bridge a little over 4 years ago, and the memories are still so fresh, even more so when being faced with this. Cancer took my Golden, also.

Sky, you've met and cuddled with my cuddle Face, you've seen first hand how obsessed I am with my guys. Remember how gently they were with your sweet Gizzer? I will definitely ask my doctor for some Xanax (sp.). Does it work instantly or is it something I need to take for a while before I feel its effects?

BTW, what Simon has is cancer, too, but if it's the same thing that was removed 3 years ago (and my vet is fairly certain that it is), then removing it will take care of it without having to undergo any other treatment. This cancer is not invasive and doesn't spread to other organs, it's underneath the skin only.

All his bloodwork came back normal - hopefully a good sign.

Again, thanks everyone. :)

PS> Sky, give Gizzer a kiss, treat and cuddle for me. :)

You are in my thoughts and prayers. I hope all goes well and he has a speedy recovery. I, too, lost a dog to cancer. That was about 5 years ago. I still miss him a lot! He was my baby.

Well, the day has come, and I dropped of Simon (Face) for his surgery a little over an hour ago. :(

It had to have been one of the longest mornings in my life, waiting for the vet to call me to let me know he was ready for him. So now the waiting is on, and my stomach is in the biggest knot. I'm physically nauseous, shaking, can't concentrate on a darn thing, my eye lids are flicking uncontrollably, and my heart is racing.

My vet estimates for the surgery to take at least 2 hours, and he promised to call me as soon as Simon's awake. I'm infamous for tying up the phone lines at his place during previous surgeries.

Please wish him luck, everyone - I'm not ready to lose him yet.

Good wishes for Face.

My family had Bernese mountain dog that was put to sleep 1.5 years ago because of cancer on the tongue :/ He was a bit..unpredictable, eheh, so cleaning a wound on his tongue every day would have been the devil. He was 10, I think.

Eventhough I still have a scar on my hand from the time I attempted to hug him while he slept, I miss him at times.

Ulrich & Vys,

Thank you both so, so much.

I couldn't take it any more and called. Simon survived! The vet's exact words were: "He's doing splendidly." :) In 20 minutes we'll leave to pick him up.

The tumor that was removed turned out to be numerous sebaceous cysts running into one huge mass. My vet warned me, however, that half of my dog is shaved, that he's bandaged up, and that the scar is enormous.

I don't care! My boy is alive, and he'll be home with us shortly!!! His fur will grow back and cover the scar, and hopefully we're blessed with him for a while longer.

Ulrich, your feelings/intuitions were right on the spot. I'm sitting here crying happy tears like you wouldn't believe. Simon's so much more than our pet - he's family - and very much loved by us all.

Thanks for the hug - I needed it.

Hugs back to all.

A VERY relieved and emotional Wendy

PS. Vys: Simon has a nick-name from the vet and his staff. It's "Cuddle-Bear". He's the biggest, softest and gentlest giant they've ever encountered. He has never as much as showed a tooth to anyone in their office.

Oh, and my other Berner, Max, has been moping around all afternoon, looking for his buddy.

Poor guy :(

I'm glad he made it though, he is a beautiful dog.
I'm not much of a dog person, but I can definitely appreciate such a cuddly looking one :D
