Excellent stuff. :) Since Phil2's stick insect topic I've realised I miss keeping these myself. I've been thinking of getting a couple more, and I think you just clinched it.

Congrats! These are really great insects. We have a female and two males here at the insect museum at my university. Just make sure they are kept warm enough and have the right kind of food. We feed ours oak leaves (washed very meticulously, and frozen to keep over the winter) as well as some organic lettuce (check if they have pesticides!!!) and strips of carrots in water (they love it).

You'll surely have lots of fun with your new aquisitions :D

ummm....woooooooooooow that stick is huge! (no, i'm not quoting porn movies :D) I saw some huge mantids at the butterfly exhibit at the Natural Science museum in Houston, i think some were close to that size. Very very impressive...I'm going to guess that these puppies aren't available in the US?

Eurycantha sp

HEllo All,
Anastasia, your phasmids are really nice.
I would like to give you some advise.
E calcarata and any other Eurycantha sp come from tropical regions (Papua New Guinea) so they do better in more enclose terrariums, they like 70-80% humidity, they are more ground dwelers rather than tree dwellers.
You don't need any special lighting.
temperature 73-75 F or room temp is great.
Lettuce is not a good nutricious foodplant for any phasmid, they eat it because is there, they can eat paper if you give them the chance.

Food Plants:Bramble,Oak,Guava,Mango,Pyrocantha,Wax Myrtle,Rose.
Ivy will also be taken but the smaller nymphs won't take since it seems to be poisonous for them.

They need some substrate for egglaying, eggs can be incubated in the terrarium or take to a separate container with vermiculite or peat moss make sure is humid not too wed. They take several months to hatch so be patience.

Good luck with them.

Very interesting bugs! But you'd be hard pressed to get me to hold it. :8o

I got bit by one of our local stick insects once. Gratifying to know it ended up in a high school bug collection project. {D
