OMG! so I went into petco the other day to get some substrate for my T's when I noticed two A.Avics and 2 G.Roseas in the same tank! I mentioned to the lady that they needed to be split up and she tells me "oh? no they are all from the same momma so they wont hurt eachother" I then explained to her that A.Avics and G.Roseas couldnt possably be from the same sack. she got agrivated and said "it was a hybrid sack so they dont all look the same" WOW this one has brains!. I ended up getting the manager and had them split up the T's and change the substrate from wood chips to cocout fiber bedding. I also dont know much about Scorps but they had 5 of them in one tank (each of them had a corner and one in the midde) I knew they were stressed so I had them split up aswell.

Anyone else have a petstore horror story?

These things really tick me off! What an idiot! These pet store people think they can so easily trick us because they don't want to work, but this is getting out of control. Not half the stuff they say is logical. I'm getting crazy sick of these "pet store people". Luckily you were able to do something about it, though.

That's why people should try to do what they love to do rather than what just pays the bills...

I know this is very ideal, but pet stores often hire people who just work for money rather than people who really love what they do. Most members of this forum wouldn't have to go through "training" to take care of the terrarium section of the pet store. That's why I love most of the dealers who sell exclusively tarantulas. They know what's up 'cos they love what they do!

Blessings!

In defense of a good pet shop guy - - I went to get a couple dozen crickets the other day and "Reptile Joe" saw me looking at the T's. He got my crickets for me and then asked how my spiders were doing. I told him that they were doing well. I also told him that I noticed all his T's needed water - - they were all bone dry with big 'ole dry sponges in the dishes (one actually had two large crickets living in the sponge).

He said he'd get on it, so I pushed a little further and explained that the sponges should only be used to transport T's for humidity, and that they weren't needed in the water dishes. He removed them immediately and appreciated me explaining it. On my way to the counter, he said "no charge for the crickets today. You paid with information instead."

Next, I'll try to teach him that H. lividum needs more than a half inch of wood chips as substrate . . . . . one battle at a time :wall:

Sorry to rub it in, but there are a few pet stores around here that really know what's up.

Hoffers http://www.tropiclifepets.com/php/index.php is really huge really awesome and has specialists for each dept. I have tested the depts that I know enough to test and so far so good. (Little pricey though, especially Ts)

Also, there's a small place right by my house where the owner has been very helpful through a few incidents involving different critters. Best part is his T selection is out of this world for a LPS. right now he has pulchras, c. fasciatums, b. klaasi, b. auratum, b emilia, c. crawshayi, p cambridgei, a urticans, g pulchripes, and of course a few rose hairs. Also found some Geosesarma notophorum there... aka vampire or mandarin crabs, I believe.

One time I went to our local pet shop called "Pet delight", I was looking for a Netherland dwarf and they try to sell me some flemish giants lol. those idiots they think i won't be able to notice the big difference lol. I never came back to that pet shop because they also have a horrific smell. I hope they run out of business.

On the other hand, I also like pet shop that don't know their stuff because I know their stuff lol. One time I went to this pet shop and they are selling an adult 8" female X immanis for 100 bucks. It was labeled Goliath birdeater lol I ask the owner where he got it and he said that someone gave it to him. I told him its a wrong sp and its not the real one and if i could get it for 85 :D. That day I went home with an adult female X immanis lol.

also my friend got a B barguamtini labeled as a red leg in san diego lol

well my point is that there are pros and cons about pet shop people who don't know their stuff :)

My LPS had an B. vagans juvie that died sometime in July.

They moved the container over to ontop of a few other spare KKs just sitting around.

It was still there yesterday. Dead. I don't want to know what 2 month old dead tarantula smells like.

Some petstores are good like the one only petstore on ti's own that care about their animals.
And crap petstores like Petsmart and Petco that can only keep the cages clean.

ok ok ...Just one thing.

Im the first one who thinks NO ONE should be in chargue of ANY animal if they dont know hot to take care of them.

Im also the first one who gets upset when dealing with those disgusting pet stores....

BUT,

What do you expect, for the love of God.

One thing is to complaint because they dont have water, or they have 2 or 3 in the same tank...Or they hjave them dead on display...
Another is to expect to see 10" coco fiber with a burrow and plants in the enclosure.

Those are way over the top unreal expectations. They hhave them for sale, dont expect to see micro habitats for every single animal they sell on the store. They wouldnt exist then.

I dont buy ANYTHING besides dirt on the pet stores.ANYTHING.
But to make them change substrate...Thats an inmature expectation.

I know this sounds bad, but in petcos defense, I went to one about 45 miles from me, and they had all the proper set ups for T's. coco fiber, hides, water dishes. So not all petcos are as bad as others :)

Personally, I don't expect micro habitats, but I also think it's a waste of money if they won't take just an extra step or two to slightly improve their keeping, causing them to kill product or lose customers. Sure, a person might go back a time or two to buy a replacement & blame the death on them self, but eventually they either get smart or give up.

When I get a whim to take an afternoon to go somewhere, I happily drive an hour away to go poke my nose in a pet store that care for their Ts better. They use inexpensive glorified deli cup type containers to store Ts with about 2-3" of moist substrate (not sure what it is, looks like some type of soil) & a bottle cap with water. Most get something tossed in there to web against/burrow under.

Not perfect, but not horrible either.

Definitely true. They all get the same care info and training, but it is up to the individual managers to enforce!

If they were to leave webs up, and let tarantulas burrow they would never sell them. If some guy goes in to look at the tarantulas and all he sees is a hole he most likely isn't going to buy it. On top of that they would have to wrangle H. lividum's out of a burrow if someone did actually buy it. I would love to see the conversation where the pet store workers explain how pretty and blue the tarantula is down the hole, and then when the guy ask to see it they can't let him. Would you want to buy a tarantula you couldn't see?

As far as the workers knowledge goes.
Most of the time the people who work at pet stores are no different then the ones buying from them. The owners, and the ones writing the "care pamphlets" are the ones they get their information from.
I recently had someone tell me that in the cities that down allow any "poisonous insects" some times its okay if they are "devenomed". I assumed he meant defanged, and said well it wouldn't be able to eat if it was defanged, he then corrected me and told me he meant "devenomed", and I just shrugged it off. I have also asked recently who writes the pamphlets for petsmart, and was told "the higher ups".
