Ohh I see, too bad was hoping for a first hand account of how it smelled! I read it's edible when the "egg" is still present.

Oh, I've still smelt several different stinkhorn species, including L. mokusin. Though the smell of that species isn't as strong as some others, it is one of the more unpleasant in my opinion. Very reminiscent of feces. Here's a couple of pics of two fresher specimens, photographed on the same trip.

Hard to say. I'm not too familiar with overseas species, plus mushroom identification is extremely difficult anyway. I suggest you consult a local field guide.
