Staphylinidae are great. It's one of the largest beetle families by number of species, and they're voracious little predators. Some are also pretty good fliers.

Most are in the one to two millimeter range, but I've seen a few get up to an inch.

Some people first see them and think they can sting because they run around with their abdomen raised up. But no worries; they're nonvenomous.

I'm not sure of the name but I think it's a burrowing cricket, or ground cricket. It makes a really loud noise.

Its not a cricket sorry, as everyone has said its a rove beetle,

Don't some species excrete a noxious chemical?

From the article on one species in particular:
It also emits a foul smelling odour, as a defensive secretion, from a pair of white glands at the end of its abdomen.
The species that article is about is one of the larger ones at over an inch, Staphylinus olens.
