Yeah, I think it's a Steatoda borealis or grandis. It's not always easy to tell them apart because the markings on the abdomen can differ quite a bit.

They build cobwebs, but mature males, like this one, leave their webs to go looking for mature females to mate with. If you found this one walking around, that's probably what he was up to. :) If you still have him, release him and let him do his job.
