perilite is fine but i wouldn't do a 1:1 mixture...i personally would use some medium grade vermiculite. its an inert material and its holds moisture very well.

do like a 60% peat to a 40% vermiculite mixture.

perlits is about useless in a T tank, ive tried it. It holds no moisture and all it does is make the soil not compact, not thats food for potting soil but not for a T burrow i dont think
I use 100% peat, and or coco fiber. or a mix. I have added some spagnum(same as peat just not composted and shredded) to help hold moisture in the top parts of the substrate before , also it looks a bit better ...maybe lol
