SandDeku, we cannot spoon feed you information. Take that species name to google and start searching.

Edit: I guess we could, but that only helps you on that specific issue and leads to your current behavior (posting threads asking for info on everything b/c you cannot find answers yourself).

jesus. iam looking. >_>

Iam mainly posting to show which species I like.

Edit: some species pictures don't really even have a name or scientific name to go by. I can point out many pictures with no ID of a sort. Just general ID "millipede"

Im sorry if my reply was a bit curt, but when a person posts a link to a species of beetle and says what is below I cant do anything else but assume they are asking for the information to be fed to them with a spoon.
how do I find out where I can find em? If I find out the ones I want to care for. You guys mind giving me caresheet? Or tell me where I can find one?
And as RyTheTGuy said, the very first result of the google search tells you the answers to exactly the questions you are asking (and more) with very detailed natural history info... I can see you looked very hard before posting the thread...

That is true...what does that matter? Are you asking us to provide you a solution to things not being IDd on BugGuide?

1)Yeah I was posting the pictures of some insects I like for more referance so I can later remember, as well as you guys know.
2)I did do a google search before on "insects of new jersey" nothing of relevance came up. :l

3)That was my answer to what you said before that I was asking to be spoon fed. But I am stating that if I can't even find the name or don't know the name. How will I find t he species Iam looking for? I mean Iam pretty sure if I google something like "millipedes" over a thousand species will appear. Plus alot of species of insects do have some resemblance to one another. so it'd be hard to identify. I can bring some examples from bug guide where they do not provide exact species name as well as scientific name.<---Edit to th is too:
SO. How can I find information on something I'ved only seen but don't even know the name of?

You want to look for insects in new england (new jersey may be too specific.) Go to your library and get a field guide on insects. Go to your fish and wildlife place and ask them for more information.

I have cave cricket babies.

Why would you want a dung beetle? Just curious, that would make one smelly enclosure.

I like the look of them. But I was actually wondering---instead of dung if they would take anything else. Because I remember hearing somewhere that there are some dung beetles that make balls of dirt and detritus and such. I am not a 100% sure. I like their scarab beetle look. :x

His questions aren't that bad. He's asking how he can find the info and where he can go to get it. It's obvious he/she is inexperienced compared to many here in using the internet (google) for finding information. Sometimes just saying "google" doesn't really get that person anywhere because your common sense does not pertain to others. This person is using google, but is not using it well or to its potential. Anyway, it's still funny to see people get riled up about it. As for dung beetles, yes people do keep them. I'm reading from one source that the dung is only necessary when you plan on breeding them. Good luck ;)

Thanks for understanding. Iam just not that good with research skills at all. SO I ask for a little extra help whenever I feel I can't find it. I been looking for days. Still haven't found any important information on what I been looking for(species and other stuff). I can't even find legalities in nj. Because I need a PDF file or something. I don't know how to use that. I can't even look up fishing liscense.

I found some waterbeetles yesterday. Caught some turtles too. A wildlife officer its illegal to take wildlife out of the wild. But he let me keep the bugs. :l That's new to me. Since I was told its legal.... I took a musk turtle had to put it back.
The beetles escaped.. they were a mm long..... Green heads(iridescent), and brown bodies. Sorta like a bullfrog persay(without the yellow).

As for dung beetles--- I don't even know where to begin to look. Ussually you find bugs everywhere. But there should be a general area of WHERE to look.
Thanks for the understanding.

@PSHH I found some cavecrickets last year at a friends house. But I ran from it scared since it started to chase me. :x Iam afraid to get bitten--untill it happens.

I can't find info pertaining their care though. Especially since they are pest species. I don't know if I could just take info on how they live in the wild and replicate their conditions to the best I can. Or if another type of care would be better.

:x Iam not the brightest bulb from the box. Though Iam the most persistant one persay.

Okay I think there is just a bit of a misunderstanding here...SandDeku, if you scroll down below the pictures, you can read the comments of posters where a lot of times you will find the scientific name or at least some possibilities. Bugguide will not always label the picture with the ID. I'm assuming that's what you were referring to when you said you can't find the name of the beetle.

They dont bite. The care is pretty much the same as regular crickets except they like it a little bit more humid/moist. They like it cooler than hotter.

SandDeku, please read this page, hopefully it will help you improve your search methodology as it obviously is completely ineffective currently.

I probably need a disclaimer about being completely not noob friendly, but please keep my earlier response in mind when thinking about asking another question. :)

The noob part was unnecessary and offensive. A noob is someone who refuses to learn and is looked down upon. Versus a newb which is someone who is completely new at something and wants to learn, as well as takes the advice. I did take your advice. You're not seeing anymore threads as of lately. Sure ill post some every so often. The link you gave me---just confused me even more. I went there and read it and I don't understand it. But ill manage.

I keep looking for stuff on them. I don't seem to find much. But ill keep looking. I just need to know where to get some and their lifespan/diet. lol

Ah ok!

Well here's some simplified search advice that might help:
Use bugguide to see if you can ID first and foremost. If not, try posting a pic on here. If you want to look it up yourself, I usually start my searches with the most specific I can get it and work my way outward. A lot of times, a state's website will list prominent wildlife, especially if they're pest insects. Sometimes I just have to resort looking through google pictures until I find one that looks like mine and gives a species name so I can check the locality in a different search. Sometimes I can ID really quickly, sometimes it takes me a few days, and there are those rare occasions where I have to go to my campus and bust out the microscope and dichotomous keys.

For example:
I'll start with beetle in Newark
2. insect in Newark
3. beetle in blah blah county
4. insect in blah blah county
etc. etc.

@Pssh: Are you by the rockies? I saw the most adorable cricket called the jerusalem cricket. I so want that little darling. Even the "singing" it makes alures me.

Also the northern mole crickets. Iam starting to like crickets more and more. just not the run of the mill crickets.

It was unintended, and now I completely give up on you. Any offense taken from *this* post is completely intended, I will not be attending your threads in the future (unless they become interesting...which would be a surprise). Feel free to post in peace from me now...

You don't get it do you? Its how things are given that makes the difference. Even if you don't like someone you should still smile pleasantly. Basically its just being courteous

You can do as you want. I could also show you separate links of what a "noob" means, as well as "newb". That's why I took offense to it. Because its a form of saying "hey Iam better than you". This happens on every forum/site online frankly its getting annoying to hear the word noob. I'm pretty sure you would be too.

No offense meant.

Plus: Everyone has different opinions and views upon things so minds are bound to crash upon each other here and there. Just wanted to also point that out.
