Yep. These snakes can turn up just about anywhere. I find them in my apartment's garden all the time. We have a bit of a slug problem...bad for vegetables, good for snakes. Can't say I mind!

Do you subscribe to REPTILES magazine? One issue had an awesome article on finding northern browns in Philadelphia(like in the actual city). I absolutely would LOVE to find some in the city just to say I found snakes in the city.

I live on long island, NY and the only snakes i've ever seen here (and very rarely mind you), are garter snakes. I was shocked at this snakes appearance, i've never seen this kind here before.

I found it at a local park, which has a very tiny patch of wooded area that snakes and red-backed salamanders still live in, all around here it's urban with no natural wooded areas, so this is the only place where you can find them basically.

Unfortunetly, this snake in the photo is actually dead! I found it laying on the ground in this position and thought it was a rubber snake toy because kids are all around here, so I picked it up, but it was sort of limp. Then I realized it was real, but it was hardly moving.

It was an unusually warm 70 F Winter day and mabye this snake (looks like a juvenile) came out of hibernation too early to bask in the sun, and it suddenly got cold so mabye it froze or was sick. i bought it home and put it in the tank with a heat lamp in case it was still alive and needed to warm up, because it looked like it was barely breathing when I found it, and it was still squishy and didnt smell like it was rotting, and the color was like that of a live snake.

I feel bad it died, but it was interesting to find!

I found a speckled king in a similar position when I lived in Arkansas. I threw it at my mom and she laughed because she though it was a toy....then it broke in half  {D

That's not funny for the snake... :(
uh..it was dead..
EDIT: Ok since apparently people think a live snake will just break in half lol, let me clarify. I found a DEAD specimen in that position. :)

I'm not subscribed right now, but I probably should since I usually end up buying the issues anyway. Sounds like a cool article. I like it when they feature native species.

A snake this size and with similar markings was found in Eastern MD last fall. Are they uncommon?

They are common, I find them here in northern IN aswell. I wouldnt reccomend trying to keep it as a pet, think theyre also known as DeKays Snake thats what Ive called them before.
