Sling Trying To Escape

I have a new rose hair sling that I've had for about a week. He was originally put in an enclosure too big since I didn't know what size he was going to be. Since then I have downsized him much smaller. I have about 6 in of substrate, a small hide, wet moss in one corner to drink from, and places to hide. He is most likely stressed from his new house and being shipped. He has recently been climbing the walls a lot and trying to stick his legs out through the air holes to get out. I tried to feed him once but he wouldn't eat. Is there any way I can make him more comfortable and help him settle in or is all I need time?

Apologies that the photos are so huge (for me at least). You can see him in the second picture against the front glass.

what your sling is doing s normal for all ts anytime they get rehoused keep in mind some settle within the day/days to weeks and longer to into their new cages settle down. you can just remove the moss and use a water bottle cap as a water dish for i.t all that moss just gives its food more places to hide along with making it harder to find your sling if/when it decides to burrow . good luck and enjoy your box of dirt your gonna have for years now:rofl:

It's a 4x4x4. I'll add another picture of him for a further reference. I would say he's no bigger than a penny.

If you look at the lid then look at the feeding door, you see the air vent slits? That small sling will escape right through those vents.

I either cover those up or rehouse your sling in something slightly smaller.

I would also advise not to have the substrate depth at 6 inches or more.

Waaayyy too big of an enclosure. It's beautiful, and will work when it's bigger.
I know pretty enclosures are appealing, but as owners, we need to do whats best for the T. And in this case, a deli cup is perfect.

Downsize that enclosure for sure.Abdomen is nice sized.Time is the answer.

Slings will use the enclosure many times as their burrows. It’s moving around is normal as it’s instinctively reacting to a wide open environment.

A much smaller enclosure will make it “feel”,more secure.

Would something like a 2x2 work better? And how many inches of substrate? He's a climber so I don't want to leave too much of a gap at the top for when he inevitably falls.

Terrestrial tarantulas need 2 times their legspan horizontally and vertically.

Easiest way is take a nickel and look around your home for a small container. Use the nickel as a reference size.

If you can't find anything run to the store like Dollar General. I know they have containers, I have a ton of them just from that store alone.

at about 1.5" diagonal legspan I sized up to 2" x 3" x 4".

She's 2" now and waiting for one more molt before I move her to something deeper.

Just gonna add onto what Gilligan said about the water dish--if bottle caps look a bit big at this size, you can use anything that is small and spider-safe that can hold water! I've personally used rinsed out pill dimples, and I've seen others use tattoo ink caps, seashells, and so on.
