Is the bald spot turning black?

Does it have hooks under the first two legs? (Not the pedipalps).

idk how old he is exactly. i got him in november, but he was on sale because they had him for a while. so, idk.

yes, the spot is getting darker. when it started to go bald, iti was a dark pinkish color, but now it's black. and he does have hooks. :-( does that mean he is getting old?

i dont have a working camera right now, but he spans about 3 inches, but his abdomen is less than 1 inch long and 1/4" tall. it is smaller than the top of my thumb, and i am a pretty small girl.

i hope this is enough of a description. i tried calling every vet i could find online and nobody near me handles arachnids. :-(

also, should i stop giving him crickets if he isnt eating them? they stay in the tank for over a week at least. i dont think he likes it, but he never hides and he is really active.

The hooks means that he is a mature male so he could be considered old for a male. MM's typically do not eat much as they are only concerned with finding a female. Enjoy him while you have him.

He was probably on sale because he is a mature male and does not have too much longer to live. Once they hit their ultimate molt, G. rosea have maybe 1-2 years to live.

The spot turning black indicates he is approaching a molt. This will be a post ultimate molt and 99% of the time, they do not complete a post ultimate molt. He could be anywhere between 4-7 years old. Males do not live as long as the females.

Males abdomens are typically smaller and bald and look pretty ragged.

No vet handles Arachnida. There is nothing that you would have to take a tarantula to a vet for that you couldn't do yourself.

Mature males have one objective and that is to find a female and mate. That's why it's so active.

So enjoy the little time you have left with him.

if its got hooks ur t already had its ultimate molt. if hes showing premolt signs again( the pink spot turnin black) he about to have his pen-ultimaate and likely die. if not this molt , its a matter of a month or so... id get my money back.... sorry friend

Not quite correct. Penultimate means next to the last so the molt he had before hooking out would have been his penultimate.

you can always go back to /contact the place or person u got it. maybe theyll work a deal with ya as compensation for your hassle. just hope he was a good "stepping stone" in the hobby.................. as far as findin a female for him... good luck as males tend to lose their "spunk" after there maturing molt.. it as at its peak when he matures then it fades away... in a race against time, ya gotta expect to lose

are females more aggressive? and do you think mine is not aggressive at all because he is so old?

he lets me handle him really well.

A 3" MM rose hair? Is that with the legs or without?
Are you sure about those hooks?
Are the pedipalps enlarged at the ends?

Hmm... I just now saw the post where she said 3".

When we say hooks, it is under the first set of legs, not the claws at the ends. Just in case that's what you might have been looking at. Like Hobo said, are the pedipalps balled up?

2 pictures

Hey, so just incase.

I have a couple of my own pics of a MM G.rosea RCF, one is not so clear, as it was taken with a camera phone. Iv circled the area's were to look to see if it is indeed a MM you have

First is the pedipalps, Do they appear "boxing glove like", like in this picture ? (Pedipalps being the 2 small legs located beside the fangs)

and do the first set of front legs (beside the pedipalps) have hooks on them like in the following pic ?

if they match, then indeed it is a mature male on his last legs. I dont mean any offence by this post/comment i just wrote, it is meerly to just be sure ;P
