my mother is a bio teacher and was bringing 30 fish home for the night and then taking them to the class as class pets the next day, she changed them from their old container to a new clean (we thought) container and we found them floating the next morning :(

and i was gonna keep those suckers >.<
Did she detoxify/dechlor the water when she did the change?

oh, we didn't even change the water, she literally dumped it from one case to the next in the same water. i think the second case had to have some chemical in it that we didn't know about. :(

Uhm, could have been more than that, or less, depending on how you look at it. You're supposed to do transferes slowly with fish by gradually pouring some of the tank water into their bag, like a tea cup every few minutes over a time of up to an hour (depending on how much water we're talking of). That to have the fish adjust to the new water temperature and make. The topic doesn't end there but that would be the first thing I would think might have gone wrong.

I know this thread is ALL kinds of dead, but I just had to say that I read that as "fancy puppy" and was absolutely horrified when I read it.

I'm 27 and moved back home to go to school. Mom still regularly asks me what I want for dinner, and I have plenty of pets that are worth considerably more than $50.

I had a large female king baboon that came to me in bad shape. I attempted to nurse her back to health, but she eventually died, about 2 months after I got her.

shortest lived was probably a hamster I brought home from petco- there was a tank with several of them up for adoption (free), so I sexed them and took home the females, so no unsuspecting adopter would end up with more unwanted babies. My plan was to wait out three weeks to see if they were pregnant, and then re-home them. After the three weeks were up, one of them just randomly died... They were pretty young, so I don't even understand that one...

I bought a baby florida softshell at the Tinley Park NARBC. It was dead by the time I got home, 3 hours later.

In the end it all worked out because a freind of the breeder drove up and gave me a replacement :)

this is a pretty interesting thread. I had a flying squirrel that lived for 2 days and an A.metallica that died the day after I bought it.

I've had horrible luck with Avic purpurea. Purchased 2nd instars a total of 3 times I think and had all 3 die within a week. Haven't had problems with other avics so apparently I just have bad luck. I did end up ordering 6 larger well-started slings from tarantulas.com when they had them for something like 6 @ $35 each or $210? These are all still alive and doing well. Feeding well, molted a few times. I paid about as much for the 2nd instar slings as I did for the well-started slings (they were like 1.25" when I got em.)

This occurred many years ago. While walking down a road on Kangaroo Island, my father found this very small black snake and brought it back to the beach house we were staying at. No idea whether it was a naturally small species of snake or a young juvenile but the plan was to keep it as a pet.

While the others were back inside, I gently put my hand beneath the snake and let it sit there. I just liked the feel of it on my skin (it didn't act defensively at all.) Thinking back, that was a really silly thing to do. I didn't know anything about this particular species of snake - whether it was venomous or not. I was young and stupid!

Later in the day, when I was out, I learned that my little sister (who was a toddler at the time) had tipped over the container which we were keeping the snake in. Freedom for the snake.

Edit: Oops...I just re-read the title of this thread. This pet didn't die...it was just inadvertantly released!

This is the only pet snake that i have ever had ....and it was just for one day.

God, I hate live animal prizes.
I couldn't agree more.

As for me, I work at a pet store and whenever something gets sick and the veterinarian prescribes meds, I sometimes take it home to medicate it. If the animal is very ill, I'd rather it be home with me and receive every dose of medication. Sometimes a hamster is so bitey that I know the other associates aren't medicating it.

Sometimes they don't even make it through the night and I swear I'll never take one home again. :( But often, they get all better and I know that taking it home is the right choice.

I know that feeling. As much as I wanted to, my gm wouldn't let me take home this emaciated frilled. He forced me to pay an "adoption fee" of $100 even thought it was owner surrendered and no where in P&P is there stated to be a required fee. I paid it anyway and he died before I could take him home. He was required to be forcefed and I couldn't do it more than once a day because of my shifts and the fact he wouldn't let me take it home. He also wouldn't let me take it to the vet. I was stuck using some leftover STAT to medicate him with. (I did it secretly since I could have been fired if he cared enough)   Also, said fee was not refunded...though it did go to a good cause with an ulterior motive. He would save the fees for the donation drives so he could get good ratings in the company. I still think that frilled would have lived if I could have taken care of it properly.
