I thought you could legally ship snakes only through FedEx or possibly DHL but today I saw the episode of Snake Bytes where they said they ship their snakes UPS. On the UPS website it says snakes are one of the prohibited live animals. Do you need to get a special permit or something to ship snakes through UPS?

last time i went to the ups store i asked the guy behind the counter and he said snakes and lizards were some of the few animals they COULD ship as long as they weren't venomous... maybe it depends on the intelligence of the employee?

Maybe. They list on their website that "all snakes venomous and non-venomous" are prohibited so I was just wondering.

I know you're not supposed to ship T's through UPS or USPS but almost everyone does.

I do think it's funny that you can't ship tarantulas, but sending a box of bees is perfectly fine.
lol
I found that funny also lol. I dont think they care or pay enough attention for it to cause any real problems. If anything come back the next day and ask a new employee, and maybe magically the rules will change over night. Just my 2 cents.

I just read on BHB reptiles website that they send their snakes FedEx. I wonder why they didn't say that on the show. O well. :?
I know getting certified to ship snakes through FedEx can be kinda tricky. I'm going to look into it soon though since i hope to have some little ones to ship out this year. :D

Getting certified to ship snakes through fedex is pretty easy. And they dont care either way as long as no one causes trouble.

Also note that shipping prohibited animals through fedex, UPS, DHL whatever is not illegal. It is against company policy.
Shipping prohibited animals through USPS on the other hand is a big no no very illegal. At least this is my understanding.

I would agree that getting certified to ship snakes with Fed Ex was a breeze. Fill out some information, send in a test package and BINGO you are certified. You can read about how to do it at this link; http://www.faunaclassifieds.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33533
Read through the thread because some changes in the process have been noted since the thread was started.

If you ship snakes UPS you do have to violate the Lacy Act and not properly label your package. This may change soon though as Pro Exotics is working with UPS to come up with a program where by they accept snake shipments. fingers crossed on that one.

As for DHL, they no longer ship anything within the confines of the United States.

The way I understand it, it isn't illegal to ship USPS, either, just against company policy, just like with any other shipping company. They will just give it back to you and tell you that you can't ship it. There are no legal consequences: no fines, jail time, or the like. It's just not allowed, not illegal.

Edit: I was referring to shipping spiders, mostly I guess...I am not sure if there is a law that applies to shipping snakes specifically, though I still think that it is just policy and not law.

I think you are thinking of UPS which is a private company rather than USPS which is the Federal Postal Service. It has always been against the law to ship venemous anything and snakes through USPS. Under then law both the person shipping and the person receiving can be prosecuted for shipping forbidden items through USPS.
