Is there a way to create a set up that will allow H. crassipes to fulfill their needs and at the same time fulfill my wants? These guys get pretty big and I wanted to know if any of the "arachnid veterans" out there know a way to let these guys do their burrowing and also let them feel comfortable enough being out in the open? Is it possible, or are they such excavating machines that they must become the infamous "pet hole" forever hiding their beauty and becoming lost in the annals of time:( ?

My only idea is to start a tunnel near a tank wall, so that you can see through said wall later. To avoid webbing on the glass(plastic) side of wall, place it diametrically away from light sources in the room...

To go along with that suggestion, if you cover the sides of the tank where you start the burrow with black paper so the light stays out, the T should make a burrow in that corner where you have made it nice and dark and when you want to see the little fellow you can remove the paper and check him out in his burrow.

Great ideas! :worship: I never thought of that. Usually my obligates go near the glass on their own and then start to go inside toward the center out of range. I never thought of starting it myself, and the black paper idea should work nicely.
Any others?

I have read once that if you maintain a decent amount of warmth and humidity in the enclosure, this may encourage the tarantula to be out and about more often. By the way, are you referring to the Australian Crassipes? Ive never heard of the 'H' before in the species name. What does the 'H' stand for?

If you make the whole enclosure seem likes its burrow then it will gladly stay out for you.

'H' stands for Hysterocrates.
I have a H.Gigas and I'm going to want to have much the same sort of set up, but I want a swimming pool for it too! That spiders dont web up so much if it is dark was a useful comment, I hadn't realised that, silly me, thats probably why my Haplos haven't webbed at all - my T's live in the black hole under the stairs that used to be a cuboard.
