Manville,

If you ever get the chance to go to the ATS conference in Carlsbad, NM, you've got to go. Rosemary does a handling demo where she handles anything and everything. I saw her handle P. regalis, C. thorelli, T. blondi, C. crawshayi, and a host of others. About the best way I could describe her is to call her "The Tarantula Whisperer". It was truly amazing.

As for me, I look at it somewhat like the venomous snakes I used to keep. If you push the odds, they'll catch up to you. My daughter likes to hold them more than I do.

MizM,
the word 'ingenious' was posted about me, and meant to be an insult by RazorRipley LOL
Rosemary is just awesome, I was sitting just to the left of her while those photos were taken.
She passed around an adult female P regalis, an H maculata, and a few others. Ipolita, the T blondi, walked on Shasta and my legs..and she was so heavy, you could see the dents her claws made!
She has video of Usambaras mating on her hand..that's how comfortable they felt :)
She is truly the 'tarantula whisperer' :)

Oh, sorry. Sometimes I don't catch those subtle insults!! Good thing too, there are probably a few directed at me!!=D

You are so lucky to have been there! The pictures take my breath away. In fact, those same pictures are my sole inspiration for starting saving up for next year's conference NOW!!! So, did you learn her secrets? Have you held any "defensives"? Oh do tell, I want to hear ALL about it!!:D

LOL! let me just say this...I learned that you just have to be VERY calm before handling. You can't rush ANYTHING. Even if it takes an hour. Or two!
Sometimes a T just does not want to be handled, and you can't force it. Rosemary was bitten by her P regalis female (not the one she brought to the conference)
So it even has happened to her. She also talks nonstop to them as she is handling them. Her C crayshawi, Anansi, was in a VERY bad mood, and repeatedly struck at the paintbrush. She even hooked a fang in Rosemary's jeans! I wouldn't have been that calm, but Rosemary said 'it looks like she doesn't want to cooperate today' and calmly guided her back into her container!
You really have to see it in person. She exudes a quiet confidence, and in turn, you become calm and confident just sitting next to her. She was able to pass around several of the spiders she was handling to us as well. It was just amazing!

Wow, incredible. Thanks for sharing. Maybe I DO have the potential for this. I talk to MY Ts constantly when I'm handling them, and I NEVER flinch when they do something unexpected. That must come from years of reptile bites.... don't pull or you'll rip the skin!!! Of course I would never try it without seeing her presentation first, but I don't feel that I would be scared with an h. lividium on my hand! However, a skittish new worlder could be in store for some quiet handling time! On IT'S terms though!!

Well, maybe I'll get to sit next to YOU next year!=D

you sound like you are well on your way...Rosemary just gives you the confidence to do it.
Hope to see you at the conference!
