Hi

I think the next animals I want to get are 2 Rough Green Snakes. They are cheap and eat insects :D Now my question is directed at people who have owned them or do own them and it's about handling. They seem like really small snakes. Are they skitish? I've only ever handled big snakes not lil ones. But when I seen some of these Green Snakes, they just looked like they can be quick and escape easily but maybe I'm wrong but basically are Rough Green Snakes good for handling?

OH and one more thing. Since this is about snakes anyways, about my thread called "Evil!" ya I fed my Milk Snake 2 rat pups (looked big enough to be adult mice) and he is still aggressive? Do I just naturally have an aggressive milk snake?

Cheers,

all the green snakes I've handled aren't skittish just...wiggle a lot. They are great excape artists though. I have any problem handling them as long as I keep a good hold on em. {D

I can imagine them being good escape artists because of how thin they are

I got one!

I just got my first snake ever today, and it happens to be a rough green snake. The handler said that the snakes tend to be quite fast, whippy, and at times stupid. He said that they dont care to be handled much, and will leap right out of your hands if you aren't careful. And sure enough he pulled out a whippy little fellow who was very courious about everything. After about 5-10 minutes it calmed down and happily coiled itself up in my hand.
Of course I wanted a smaller one so he showed me one of the smallest he had. It did not appreciate being caught, but calmed down quickly. I was then able to carry the snake on my wrist all the way to work so I could show my friends, and then home.
I don't think I will bother the little guy for a few days, just so he can get used to the new surroundings. But I am into tarantulas because they dont beg to be petted and dont jump into my lap, and this snake falls into the same sort of category, great to look at (especially since they are most active during the day) but not the best to handle.

Cool! Thanks for the info

I've caught several in the wild. I've found a few in my backyard and each time I've seen them in a bush. They are great climbers and it might like to have little branch for it to climb on. I've seen them more in small trees than I have seen them on the ground.

They definately like to wrap themselves around small 'stick like' objects for support, these usually end up being my fingers. In the wild it would be brances in trees and bushes. Just be careful and don't wear a watch while handleing them... Mine wrapped its tail around my watch band twice before I noticed. If I had tried transfering him before I noticed I probably would have broken off its tail. I didn't even feel the tail go between the band and my wrist, so be very careful.

I've had 2, both of which were wild caught and never quite got their heads round the fact they were in a tank. That said, they weren't the best escape artists (that honour belongs to Fred the corn snake who recieved far too much of the houdini gene).

I agree with everyone else, they are quite fast, and with the two I had quite nervous aswell (but as I said, they were wild caught..)

Weird . . .

So, Lori gave me the snake that she mentioned as an early birthday present. :D But he seems just fine with being handled! It's like he's saying, "oh, I'm in some guy's hand. That's cool."

And he's being weird, too . . . he's not climbing the fake plant I gave him. He curled up under a piece of cork instead. I heard someone say that they tend to burrow prior to molts, but his eyes are crystal clear still. Any thoughts?

Snakes, like most animals, will usually alter their behavior due to the stress of a new environment. There's absolutely no reason to worry about it--but also don't be surprised if its personality and activities change after a few weeks or months. :)

Ok. I showed him the climbables yesterday and he seems to enjoy them, so I'll leave him alone now.
